About Dune & Shade
A single-topic site about the gear you haul from the car to the sand, written by one person and built around one rule: never claim to have tested something we have not.
Who writes this
Dune & Shade is owned, edited and written by Selena Hann, who publishes here as Selena H.. There is no staff, no contributor network and no freelance pool. Every page on the site was researched and written by the same person, which is worth knowing both as a strength and as a limit.
The strength is consistency: the same standards are applied to every product, and when a page says a manufacturer publishes no weight, someone actually went and looked. The limit is scale. This site grows slowly because each page requires reading the source material properly, and that is the trade we have chosen.
What we do, precisely
We read manufacturers' published specifications, compare them, explain the physics that makes one design work where another fails, and say plainly where the published record runs out. That last part turns out to be most of the value: a surprising number of popular beach products are sold without a published weight, packed size or capacity, and nobody else seems willing to say so.

The site as it stands today.
What we do not do
- We do not claim to have tested these products. No page says "in our testing", because there is no testing. Every roundup, comparison and guide carries a box saying so above its first product.
- We do not publish prices we cannot verify. A remembered price is a wrong price. Every product currently shows "check price on Amazon" because we have no live price feed yet.
- We do not invent ratings or reviews. There are no star ratings, no review counts and no scores on this site, because we have no basis for any of them.
- We do not average contradictory figures. When sellers of the same product disagree, we print the disagreement. Averaging unverified numbers is how wrong figures become facts.
- We do not give medical advice. Several pages touch on sun exposure, heat and mobility; each says what the product does and refers the rest to someone qualified.
How this is funded
Dune & Shade earns a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. Several products we recommend are sold direct by their makers and are not on Amazon at all — Shibumi, CoolCabana and parts of Neso's range — and we earn nothing from those. We recommend them anyway where they are the better answer, and the page says so when it happens.
Nobody has paid to appear here, no manufacturer has seen a page before publication, and no product has been supplied to us. The full statement is on the affiliate disclosure page.
Why this site exists
Because the beach gear category is badly served. When we looked at what ranks for these searches, we found pages claiming hands-on testing with no methodology, specifications contradicting the manufacturer, and a striking number of beach-gear articles published on domains that have nothing to do with the outdoors. Almost nobody publishes a comparison table, and almost nobody admits what they do not know.
The gap is not more opinions. It is someone reading the spec sheets carefully and being honest about the gaps. That is what this is.

Corrections are genuinely welcome, particularly on specifications — if a manufacturer publishes a figure we have recorded as unpublished, we want to know. Email contact@duneandshade.com or use the contact page.
