The short answer
Be careful with the numbers in this category
We went looking for manufacturer specifications for balloon-tire beach wagons and found a mess. Review sites describe the same Sekey tires as both "9 inch wide" and "9 x 4 inch", which cannot both be true. Capacity claims for comparable 9 inch wagons range from 440 lb to 600 lb across different sellers and brands. Several of the pages ranking for these searches are on repurposed domains with no connection to outdoor gear at all.
What is documented: Sekey's own instruction manual. It gives a 600 lb maximum load, a 200 L capacity, 220 lb per wheel and the inflation range. Everything else in this category that we could not source to a manufacturer is not repeated here as fact.
What balloon tires actually do
A tire supports a load by pressing on the ground over its contact patch. Keep the load and halve the pressure in the tire and the patch roughly doubles in area, because the tire deforms until the pressure balances. That is why 2 to 3 PSI is a feature rather than a flat tire: the sidewall is designed to carry the load in that state.
The consequences on sand are large. A wide low-pressure tire spreads a wagon's weight across enough sand that the surface holds, and the wagon rolls. A narrow hard tire concentrates it, the sand shears, and the wheel settles into a trough it then has to climb out of continuously. The full explanation is in do balloon wheels work on sand?
| Wagon | Tire | Published load | Pressure spec | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sekey Heavy Duty | 9 in balloon, 220 lb per wheel | 600 lb, 200 L | 0.15-0.20 BAR | Maker's manual |
| Mac Sports Push & Pull | Large, not balloon | 300 lb | — | Mac Sports |
| Mac Sports All-Terrain | Wide-tread rubber | 150 lb | — | Mac Sports |
| Rio Wonder Wheeler | 10 in rear, not balloon | 100 lb | — | Retailer listings |
Documented figures only. A dash means the maker publishes nothing we could verify.
The maintenance nobody mentions
- Pneumatic tires lose pressure. Check before each trip, and keep a pump in the car.
- They puncture. Solid wide wheels never do — that is the real argument for wide-tread rubber over balloon.
- Salt attacks valve stems and rims. Rinse the wheels, not just the bed.
- Over-inflating is the commonest mistake, and it converts a balloon tire into an ordinary bad one.
Do you actually need balloon tires?
Honestly, most people do not. If your access is a boardwalk and fifty yards of firm sand, the wide-tread rubber wheels on a standard all-terrain wagon are fine, and you avoid the pump, the punctures and the extra weight. Balloon tires earn their place on long hauls across genuinely deep dry sand, which is a specific situation rather than the default one.

Category photo#1 · Genuinely deep, dry, soft sand
Sekey Heavy Duty Beach Wagon with 9 in Balloon Wheels
The only balloon-tire wagon here whose maker publishes real numbers: 600 lb load, 200 L, and a tire pressure spec.
| Carry weight | Sekey does not publish an empty weight |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds; no folded dimensions published |
| Size / capacity | 600 lb maximum load, 200 L capacity (Sekey manual) |
| Setup | Unfold; inflate the balloon wheels to spec before first use |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 600 lb load and 220 lb per wheel, published in Sekey's own manual rather than a seller's bullet point
- Sekey publishes the tire pressure — 0.15-0.20 BAR, roughly 2.2-2.9 PSI — which is the number that decides whether balloon tires work at all
- Low-pressure balloon wheels spread load over a wide contact patch, which is the physics of floating instead of plowing
Where it falls short
- No published empty weight, and balloon-tire wagons are the heaviest kind
- Sellers describe the tires as both 9 in diameter and 9 in wide; the manual settles the load figures but not the geometry
- Pneumatic tires need checking and occasionally pumping — a maintenance item a solid wheel does not have

Category photo#2 · Heavy loads over soft ground
Mac Sports Push & Pull Wagon
300 lb capacity and a handle you can push instead of drag — the difference that matters uphill in sand.
| Carry weight | 27.1 lb (Mac Sports) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 32.3 x 23 x 8.3 in folded (Mac Sports) |
| Size / capacity | 44.9 x 23 x 38.6 in open; 300 lb capacity |
| Setup | Open the frame; the handle converts between push and pull |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 300 lb is double the standard All-Terrain's capacity
- Pushing uses your legs; dragging uses your shoulders. Over soft sand that is the whole game
- Deepest interior here at 31 x 17.8 x 13.5 in
Where it falls short
- 27.1 lb empty — the heaviest wagon in this registry
- 44.9 in long open, which needs a real car boot

Category photo#3 · The default soft-sand wagon
Mac Sports All-Terrain Beach Wagon
Wide-tread rubber wheels, 150 lb capacity and under 22 lb empty — the wagon most beach days actually need.
| Carry weight | Under 22 lb (Mac Sports) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds to under 10 in (Mac Sports) |
| Size / capacity | 37 x 21 x 25 in open; 150 lb capacity |
| Setup | Pull the frame open; no assembly |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | 600D polyester, mildew and UV resistant (Mac Sports) |
What it does well
- Large rubber wheels with wide treads — width is what keeps a wagon on top of dry sand
- Folds under 10 in, so it goes in a car with the cooler, not instead of it
- 150 lb capacity covers a full family load with margin
- Mac Sports publishes open dimensions, folded size, capacity and weight, which most wagon brands do not
Where it falls short
- Under 22 lb is still 22 lb to lift in and out of a car
- Pull handle only — the push-and-pull model is a separate product

Category photo#4 · Chairs, cooler and umbrella in one trip
Rio Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Cart
The upright beach cart rather than a wagon: 10 in rear wheels, straps for chairs and a dedicated umbrella holder.
| Carry weight | Retailers list 19 lb and 22 lb for the Deluxe variants |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; retailers list roughly 41 x 26 x 34 in assembled |
| Size / capacity | 100 lb capacity and 15 cu ft of storage per retailer listings |
| Setup | Unfold, strap chairs to the frame, slot the umbrella |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 10 in rear wheels — the biggest diameter in this registry, and diameter is what rolls over ruts
- Carries chairs and an umbrella on the outside of the frame, so the basket stays free
- Retailers consistently cite a 48 qt cooler plus four chairs
Where it falls short
- Rio Brands' own site was unreachable when we checked, so every figure here is a retailer's and they disagree on weight
- An upright cart tips more easily than a four-wheel wagon on a side slope
- 100 lb capacity is the lowest here apart from the Mac Sports lounger
