The Best Beach Chairs for 2026
Three numbers decide this: what it weighs on your back, how high the seat sits, and what the maker will actually certify it to hold.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.
Seat height is the spec people ignore and then regret
Beach chairs come in two families: low chairs with a seat 8 to 12 inches off the sand, and high chairs at about 17 inches. The low chair is the classic beach position — reclined, close to the ground, feet in the sand. The high chair is roughly dining-chair height, and you stand up out of it rather than off it.
Almost nobody thinks about this before buying and a great many people think about it afterwards. Sun Ninja sells the same chair in both heights at the same 7 lb weight, which makes the decision unusually clean: there is no penalty for choosing the one your knees prefer. If anyone in the household has stiff knees, hips or a bad back, go high — and see chairs for seniors and chairs for bad backs.
Weight: the difference between 3 lb and 11 lb is a different product
The spread in this category is enormous. Helinox publishes 3 lb 7.5 oz for its Beach Chair. Retailer listings for chairs sold as the Tommy Bahama backpack chair run from 6 lb to 11.2 lb. That is not a refinement, it is three times the load on a walk across soft sand with a cooler in your other hand.
| Chair | Weight | Seat height | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helinox Beach Chair | 3 lb 7.5 oz assembled (Helinox) | Low | 320 lb (Helinox) |
| Neso Chairs | 4.3 lb each (Neso) | Low | Not published |
| Sun Ninja Beach Chair | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) | 8.5 in | 300 lb (Sun Ninja) |
| Sun Ninja High Beach Chair | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) | 17 in | 300 lb (Sun Ninja) |
| Neso Chair XL | 7.9 lb each (Neso) | Higher | Not published |
| Tommy Bahama backpack chair | 6-11.2 lb depending on seller | 9 in on most listings | 250 or 300 lb |
| Shibumi Tall Chair | Not published | 17 in | 400 lb (Shibumi) |
Published weights and capacities. Where sellers disagree the table shows the range rather than picking one.
What the capacity figure is really telling you
A published load rating is partly about safety and mostly about build quality: frame gauge, joint design and fabric strength. Helinox rating a 3.5 lb chair to 320 lb says something real about DAC aluminum tubing. Shibumi rating its Tall Chair to 400 lb says something real too.
What is more revealing is who publishes nothing. Neso gives no capacity figure for either of its chairs, which are otherwise good products. That is not evidence they are weak — it is simply a number you cannot check before buying, and it belongs in the comparison.
Backpack straps are not a luxury
Any chair you carry more than about fifty yards should have padded backpack straps, because the alternative is one shoulder taking the whole load while the other carries everything else. Sun Ninja, Tommy Bahama and Shibumi all have them. Helinox does not, which is the sharpest trade-off in this category: the lightest chair here is also the one with no carrying system beyond its zip case.
If hands-free carrying is the priority rather than outright weight, start at backpack beach chairs.
What to skip
- Steel frames. Salt air and steel is a short story. Aluminum, ideally described as marine-grade, is what survives a few seasons.
- Chairs with wide flat feet but no sand feet. Narrow tube ends sink; genuinely wide feet float. Look at the bottom of the chair in the photos.
- Feature lists in place of specs. A phone holder is nice. A published weight is information.

Category photo#1 · Getting back up again
Sun Ninja High Beach Chair
The same chair with a 17 in seat instead of 8.5 in — the single change that matters most to most people.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick one of five recline positions |
| How it holds down | Taller, so marginally more affected by wind when empty |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- A 17 in seat is roughly dining-chair height: you stand up out of it, not off it
- No weight penalty at all against the low version — both are 7 lb
- Same five positions, cup holder, phone holder and insulated pouch
Where it falls short
- Sits you above the windbreak a low chair gives you
- A taller center of gravity on soft sand, so it wants a flatter patch

Category photo#2 · Carrying the furthest
Helinox Beach Chair
Three and a half pounds of DAC aluminum that packs to the size of a rolled towel and still takes 320 lb.
| Carry weight | 3 lb 7.5 oz assembled; 3 lb 11.5 oz packed (Helinox) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 21 x 6 x 4.5 in in its zip case (Helinox) |
| Size / capacity | 320 lb capacity (Helinox); sits low to the ground |
| Setup | Shock-corded poles snap together, then the seat clips on |
| How it holds down | Light enough to blow away empty — never leave it unweighted |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Nothing else here combines this little weight with a 320 lb rating
- Packs to 21 x 6 x 4.5 in, so it travels inside luggage rather than strapped to it
- DAC TH72M aluminum with resin hubs — the frame material is published, which is rare
Where it falls short
- No armrests, no recline, no cup holder: it is a seat, not a lounger
- Costs several times what a beach-shop backpack chair costs
- Light enough that an empty one will cartwheel down the beach in a gust

Category photo#3 · Two light chairs at once
Neso Chairs (2-pack)
A 4.3 lb low chair sold only in pairs — the lightest non-technical chair in this registry.
| Carry weight | 4.3 lb each (Neso) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; carry strap and storage pocket |
| Size / capacity | Sits low to the ground; Neso publishes no capacity figure |
| Setup | Unfold and sit |
| How it holds down | 4.3 lb — light, so weight it or fold it when you leave |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- 4.3 lb is close to technical-chair weight at a fraction of the price
- Rust-proof aluminum frame, water-resistant fabric
- Sold as a pair, which is how beach chairs are actually used
Where it falls short
- Neso publishes no weight capacity at all, which is a real omission
- You cannot buy just one

Category photo#4 · A low chair with the usual comforts
Sun Ninja Beach Chair
A 7 lb low-slung chair with five recline positions, backpack straps and an insulated back pouch.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps for carrying |
| Size / capacity | 8.5 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick a recline position |
| How it holds down | 7 lb and low to the ground — stable once someone is in it |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Five recline positions, a cup and phone holder and an insulated pouch, at 7 lb
- 8.5 in seat height is the classic low beach position, close to the sand
- Padded backpack straps, so your hands stay free for everything else
Where it falls short
- An 8.5 in seat is a long way down if your knees object
- Double the weight of a Helinox, for comforts you may not use

Category photo#5 · The one everyone already owns
Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair
The default American beach chair: backpack straps, a cold pouch and a cup holder — and published specs that change from seller to seller.
| Carry weight | Sellers list 6 lb, 7 lb, 8 lb and 11.2 lb for chairs under this name |
|---|---|
| Packed size | One Walmart listing gives 4 x 25 x 27.25 in folded |
| Size / capacity | 9 in seat height on most listings; capacity listed as 250 lb or 300 lb depending on the seller |
| Setup | Unfold; four or five positions depending on the model |
| How it holds down | Low and wide, so stable in use |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Padded backpack straps, insulated pouch, cup holder and towel bar as standard
- Sold nearly everywhere, so you can sit in one before you buy
- Reclines further back than most chairs at this price
Where it falls short
- There is no single Tommy Bahama backpack chair — several models share the name and sellers publish different weights and capacities for each. Check the model number on the box
- The heaviest versions are nearly three times a Helinox

Category photo#6 · The highest published capacity here
Shibumi Tall Chair
A 17 in-high beach lounger on a marine-grade frame, rated by Shibumi to 400 lb.
| Carry weight | Shibumi does not publish a chair weight |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds for carrying on padded backpack straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, supports up to 400 lb (Shibumi) |
| Setup | Unfold; four recline positions |
| How it holds down | A heavier-built frame than the packable chairs here |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- 400 lb is the highest capacity any maker in this registry publishes
- Anti-rust marine-grade frame, which is the part that fails first on cheap beach chairs
- A headrest shaped to keep pressure off the neck, which almost no beach chair bothers with
Where it falls short
- Sold direct only — no Amazon listing and no commission to us
- No published weight, on a product you carry on your back
Sold direct by the manufacturer. We earn no commission on this link.
