Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

Sun Ninja for most buyers: it publishes weight, packed size and canopy dimensions for every model, uses the same sand-anchoring principle, and includes a shovel and grass pegs. Neso for windy beaches specifically, where its stretch nylon-and-Lycra canopy handles gusts better than a rigid one.

Side by side on what each maker publishes.

This is not a small difference for the buyer this site is written for. If you are deciding whether a shade fits in a carry-on, "sized for 3-6 people" is not an answer and "15.7 x 7.5 x 5 in" is.

Where Neso earns its place anyway

The stretch fabric. A nylon-and-Lycra canopy deforms under a gust and recovers, rather than snapping taut against its stitching. On a beach where the wind builds through the afternoon, that elasticity is worth more than a spec sheet, and it is the reason Neso appears at the top of our wind shortlist.

Neso also uses two poles against Sun Ninja's four, which makes it quicker to pitch once you have the knack, and sells replacement poles and anchor bags individually — so a broken part is not a new tent.

Choose Sun Ninja if

  • You need to know the packed size before you buy — travel, car space, carry distance
  • You want three clearly specified sizes rather than people counts
  • You want a sand shovel and grass pegs included
  • You want the same shade to work on grass as on sand

Choose Neso if

  • Your beach is reliably windy and gusty
  • You prefer two poles to four
  • You want to buy spare poles and anchor bags separately
  • You like the stretch canopy's shape, which many owners specifically do

Where each one struggles

  • Sun Ninja: four poles and four buried pouches is the slowest pitch of the two, and a rigid canopy transmits more gust energy into its seams than a stretch one.
  • Neso: no published weight or packed size at all, which makes it effectively unplannable for travel, and it must be pitched properly taut or it sags.

#1 · Most beach days

Sun Ninja Beach Tent, 4-Person

A pole-and-sand-anchor shade that covers a family without the bulk of a cabana, and the size most people should start with.

Carry weight7.9 lb in its bag (Sun Ninja)
Packed size17.7 x 7.5 x 7.1 in carry bag (Sun Ninja)
Size / capacity7.5 x 7 ft canopy, four poles
SetupBury four sand pouches, raise the poles; pegs included for grass
How it holds downHeld by sand-filled pouches you dig in, not pegs pushed into dry sand
UPF / materialsUPF 50+ (Sun Ninja)

What it does well

  • The best size-to-weight balance in the range: family coverage under 8 lb
  • Sand-pouch anchoring works in dry sand, where tent pegs simply pull out
  • Machine washable, which matters more than it sounds after a season of salt
  • Ships with a sand shovel and grass pegs, so it works away from the beach

Where it falls short

  • Four poles and four buried pouches is a real setup, not a pop-up
  • An open canopy: it blocks sun from above but gives no shelter from blowing sand

#2 · Windy beaches

Neso Grande

A four-corner stretch canopy anchored with sand-filled bags, sized by Neso for three to six people.

Carry weightNeso does not publish a packed weight for the Grande
Packed sizeNot published; ships in a shoulder carry bag
Size / capacitySized by Neso for 3-6 people
SetupFill the four corner anchor bags with sand, raise two poles
How it holds downCorner bags are filled on site, so the hold-down weight is the beach itself
UPF / materialsUPF 50+, water-resistant nylon/Lycra blend (Neso)

What it does well

  • The stretch nylon/Lycra canopy gives rather than flaps, which is why this design suits wind
  • Anchor weight is sand you fill on arrival — nothing heavy to carry in
  • Two poles to deal with, against four on most pole-and-pouch shades
  • Neso publishes UPF 50+, and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends its Sidelines model in the same fabric

Where it falls short

  • Neso publishes no packed weight, so you cannot plan a carry-on around it
  • A stretched canopy needs its corners pulled genuinely taut or it sags

#3 · Big groups

Sun Ninja Beach Tent, 8-Person

The 10 x 10 ft version of the same design: four times the footprint of the 2-person for less than 3 lb more carry weight.

Carry weight8.8 lb in its bag (Sun Ninja)
Packed size17.7 x 9.5 x 7.5 in carry bag (Sun Ninja)
Size / capacity10 x 10 ft canopy, four poles
SetupFour buried sand pouches; longer to pitch than the smaller sizes
How it holds downSand-pouch anchoring; a bigger canopy catches proportionally more wind
UPF / materialsUPF 50+ (Sun Ninja)

What it does well

  • Covers eight people for under 9 lb — the best shade-per-pound figure here
  • Only 0.9 lb heavier than the 4-person for nearly double the canopy
  • Same sand-pouch anchoring as the smaller sizes, scaled up

Where it falls short

  • A 10 x 10 ft canopy is a genuine sail; this is the size to skip on a gusty day
  • Needs a bigger patch of beach than crowded shorelines always have

Questions people actually ask

+Is Sun Ninja or Neso better?
Sun Ninja for most buyers, because it publishes weights, packed sizes and canopy dimensions for every model. Neso for genuinely windy beaches, where its stretch canopy handles gusts better.
+How heavy is a Sun Ninja beach tent?
Sun Ninja publishes 6 lb for the 2-person, 7.9 lb for the 4-person and 8.8 lb for the 8-person, each with full carry-bag dimensions.
+Do Neso and Sun Ninja anchor the same way?
Both use fabric bags filled with sand on site rather than pegs. Neso fills four corner bags; Sun Ninja buries four sand pouches. The principle is the same and it is the right one.
