Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

Three products, one word

"Beach blanket" covers three genuinely different things, and buying the wrong one is the usual source of disappointment.

  • Sand-shedding mats. A woven two-layer fabric that lets sand fall through and stops it coming back up. CGEAR holds the patent and the technology came out of military use. This is a floor, not bedding: firm, durable, and the only type that genuinely solves sand.
  • Packable sheets. Thin parachute nylon that compresses to the size of a water bottle. Sand sits on top of these and shakes off. They win outright on packed size and on covering a group.
  • Padded blankets. A plush top on a water-resistant base. The comfortable option, and the bulky one. Worth it on damp morning sand where the others let cold through.

How each one handles sand, mechanically

This is the thing worth understanding, because it is physics rather than marketing. A CGEAR weave is two precisely offset layers of polyester: grains pass down between the upper threads and then cannot find a path back up through the lower ones. Sand does not sit on the surface because there is a route off it.

A nylon sheet has no route, so sand sits on it until you shake it. That works fine and it is not the same thing — on a windy day you are shaking sand onto whoever is downwind, repeatedly. Full detail on the distinction in what sand-free actually means.

Staying put is a real feature

A beach blanket is a large flat sheet, which is also the definition of a sail. Three approaches exist:

  1. Stakeable corners. CGEAR puts reinforced D-rings at the corners of its Original mat, so you can actually peg it down. Very few blankets allow this.
  2. Corner weight pockets. Pockets you fill with sand or stones — Matador's approach, and the standard on packable blankets. WildHorn's patented anchoring design is a variant of it.
  3. Mass. A padded blanket is heavy enough not to care. This is the quiet advantage of the bulky option.

A weave also helps independently of anchoring: air passes through a CGEAR mat rather than lifting it, which is why the company describes its Sandlite as virtually windproof. A solid nylon sheet balloons.

Which to buy

If sand is the thing that annoys you, buy the weave. If packed size is the constraint — flying, walking far, or you want it permanently in a beach bag — buy the packable sheet. If you sit on cold damp sand in spring and autumn, buy the padded one. Most people eventually own two, which is a reasonable outcome rather than a failure.

#1 · The sand problem, solved properly

CGEAR Original Sand-Free Mat

The patented dual-layer weave that lets sand fall through and not back up — the original, and still the one the others copy.

Carry weightNot published per size
Packed sizeFolds; sold in S, M, L and XL
Size / capacityFour sizes; heavy-duty D-rings at the corners for staking
SetupUnroll and stake at the corners
How it holds downStakeable at reinforced D-ring corners; the weave does not act as a sail
UPF / materialsUV-stabilized polyethylene (CGEAR)

What it does well

  • The two-layer weave is a mechanism, not a marketing claim: sand passes down through it and cannot come back up
  • Liquids drain straight through, so a spilled drink is not a wet patch for the rest of the day
  • Reinforced D-rings let you stake it, which almost no beach blanket allows
  • CGEAR developed the technology for military use, which is where the UV stabilization and seam reinforcement come from

Where it falls short

  • No published weight for any size, on a product people carry a long way
  • A woven mat is firmer underfoot than a soft blanket — it is a floor, not bedding
  • Sizes sell out: CGEAR's own listings carry back-in-stock dates

#2 · Covering a group, packing to nothing

WildHorn Outfitters Sand Escape Beach Blanket

A large parachute-nylon blanket with a patented anchoring design that compresses into a pouch the size of a water bottle.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeCompresses into a small stuff pouch (WildHorn)
Size / capacitySized by WildHorn to fit a whole group
SetupShake out and anchor the corners
How it holds downWildHorn's patented design is specifically built so it will not blow away
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Packs smaller than any mat here — this is the one that lives permanently in a beach bag
  • The corner anchoring is the patented part, and it is what separates this from a bedsheet
  • Large enough for a group, which is where per-person carry weight gets very good

Where it falls short

  • Thin parachute nylon: sand sits on top of it rather than falling through, unlike a CGEAR weave
  • No published weight or laid-flat dimensions
  • Little padding — it keeps you clean, not comfortable

#3 · The blanket you always have with you

Matador Pocket Blanket

A blanket that folds into a pocket-sized pouch, for when the alternative is sitting on sand.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizePacks to pocket size; a Mini size is also sold
Size / capacityStandard size, plus a Mini for 1-2 people
SetupUnfold; corner pockets take sand or stones as weights
How it holds downCorner weight pockets; otherwise very light
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Small enough that you stop deciding whether to bring it
  • A Mini version exists for one or two people, which most brands do not bother with
  • Genuinely useful away from the beach — parks, airports, festivals

Where it falls short

  • Matador publishes no weight or laid-flat dimensions on the product page
  • Thin by design: this is a clean dry surface, not a comfortable one

#4 · Damp sand and comfort

Nomadix Festival Blanket

A plush-top blanket on a water-resistant base — the one to bring when the sand is wet and you want to stay dry.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeNot published
Size / capacityNot published as laid-flat dimensions
SetupUnroll, plush side up
How it holds downHeavier than packable blankets, so less inclined to lift
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • A water-resistant base is the difference between dry and damp on morning sand
  • A plush top, which packable nylon blankets cannot offer at any price

Where it falls short

  • Nomadix publishes no weight or dimensions for it
  • Far bulkier than a packable blanket — this one you decide to bring

#5 · A lighter take on the same weave

CGEAR Sandlite Sand-Free Mat

The lighter Sandlite version of CGEAR's patented weave, aimed at yoga and stretching as much as sand.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeFolds into its carry form; sold in several sizes
Size / capacityMultiple sizes
SetupUnroll
How it holds downCGEAR describes the weave as virtually windproof, because air passes through rather than lifting it
UPF / materialsPolyester layers, UV resistant

What it does well

  • The same sand-falls-through mechanism in a lighter mat
  • Air passes through the weave, so it does not balloon the way a solid sheet does
  • Doubles as a stretching or yoga surface, which the heavier Original does less comfortably

Where it falls short

  • No published weight or dimensions per size
  • Lighter build than the Original, which is the trade for the weight

Questions people actually ask

+Do sand-free beach blankets actually work?
The woven ones do, by a real mechanism: a two-layer weave lets grains fall through and blocks the route back up. Nylon sheet blankets are not sand-free in that sense — sand shakes off them. See what sand-free actually means.
+What is the best beach blanket for wind?
One you can stake. CGEAR fits reinforced D-rings to its Original mat, and the open weave also lets air pass through instead of ballooning the way a solid sheet does.
+How big should a beach blanket be?
Allow roughly 15 sq ft per person lying down. Most group-sized blankets are around 80 x 80 inches, which covers four adults comfortably without chairs.
+Can you put a beach blanket under a tent?
Yes, and it is the best combination for small children — shade overhead and a clean surface underneath. See shade for babies and toddlers.
