Editorial policy
The rules every page here is written against, including the ones that make this site shorter than it could be.
Sourcing
- Specifications come from the manufacturer. Every figure on a product card is read from the maker's own published listing, and that listing is linked on the card.
- Unpublished means unpublished. Where a maker states no weight, size or capacity, the page says so. We do not substitute a retailer's number for a missing manufacturer one.
- Contradictions are reported, not resolved. When sellers of the same product publish different figures, we print the range and name the disagreement. Averaging unverified numbers is how wrong figures become facts.
- Technical claims are cited. Safety standards, published test results and regulatory figures are attributed to the body or company that published them.
- Physics is explained, not asserted. Where we say a design behaves a certain way, we set out the mechanism so you can judge the reasoning yourself.
Claims we refuse to publish
- Fabricated testing or first-hand use. Covered above, and the reason this policy exists.
- Invented ratings, scores or review counts. There are none on this site.
- Testimonials. We have no customers, so there is nothing to quote.
- Prices from memory. Prices come from live retailer data or not at all.
- Wind-speed ratings nobody published. Where no maker has tested, we describe the mechanism instead of inventing a number.
- Medical advice. We describe what products do and refer the rest to clinicians.
- Destination rules we cannot source. No official source, no page. See beach rules.
Authorship
Every page is written by Selena Hann, publishing as Selena H., and carries a visible byline with its published and last-updated dates. There are no ghostwritten pages, no syndicated content and no contributor pool. The byline on the page and the author in the page's structured data are the same person, deliberately.
Commercial independence
Dune & Shade earns commission on Amazon purchases made through our links, and nothing on several of the products we recommend. No manufacturer can pay for placement, ranking or the removal of criticism; none has supplied products; and none sees a page before it is published. The full position is on the disclosure page.
Picks are made against stated criteria — weight, packed size, how a product anchors, what its maker publishes — none of which has anything to do with commission. Where a product that earns us nothing is the better answer, it is ranked first and we point that out.
Corrections
- Report an error to contact@duneandshade.com. Specification corrections are the most useful kind and get read first.
- We check it against the manufacturer's current published listing.
- If it is wrong, we fix it and update the page's last-modified date.
- Where a correction materially changes a recommendation, we say so on the page rather than quietly editing it.
Updates
Pages are revisited when a product is discontinued, when a maker publishes a figure we had recorded as unpublished, or when a new product genuinely changes a ranking. Every page shows the date it was last updated, and that date reflects real changes rather than a scheduled touch.
AI and how these pages are produced
Research, drafting and editing here are assisted by software, and every factual claim is traceable to the source linked on the page. That is the standard that matters: not which tools were used, but whether each figure can be checked against the manufacturer that published it. Where it cannot, the page says so instead of filling the gap.
Scope
This site covers gear carried from a car to a beach: shade, seating, wheeled transport, ground coverings and bags. We do not cover swimwear, watersports equipment, electronics or anything we cannot evaluate against published specifications.
