The short answer
Why dry sand defeats a normal wagon
Dry sand has almost no shear strength. Put a narrow wheel on it under load and the sand beneath simply moves aside; the wheel settles into a trough and now you are not rolling, you are plowing. Every additional pound in the wagon deepens the trough and the rolling resistance climbs sharply.
Widen the wheel and the same load is spread across more sand, so the pressure at any point stays below what the sand supports and the wheel rides on the surface. This is exactly why dune buggies and beach wheelchairs use fat low-pressure tires, and it is the whole principle behind balloon wheels.
Push beats pull, by a lot
Dragging puts the load behind you at the end of your arms, which means your shoulders and lower back do the work and your feet have poor purchase in loose sand. Pushing puts the load in front, lets you lean into it with your body weight, and keeps your feet under your center of mass where they get more traction.
Mac Sports' Push & Pull converts between both and is rated to 300 lb, double the standard All-Terrain. It is also the heaviest wagon in our registry at 27.1 lb empty, which is the trade.
The technique that actually helps
- Walk the damp sand where you can. The strip near the tide line supports a wheel far better than dry sand and is usually barely further.
- Keep the load low and centered. A high load shifts weight onto two wheels over every bump.
- Let some pressure out of balloon tires before a deep-sand trip, within the maker's spec.
- Make one heavy trip rather than two light ones — rolling resistance in sand is dominated by sinking, and a half-empty wagon still sinks.
- If you are fighting it, turn around and push.
More on getting a full load down a beach in carrying beach gear across sand.
When a cart beats a wagon
An upright cart like the Rio Wonder Wheeler uses two big wheels rather than four small ones, which means fewer contact points but larger ones, and it straps chairs to the outside of the frame instead of filling the basket with them. On a narrow path or a steep access, the cart is genuinely easier. On a side slope it tips more readily. The full comparison is in beach cart vs beach wagon.

Category photo#1 · Genuinely deep, dry, soft sand
Sekey Heavy Duty Beach Wagon with 9 in Balloon Wheels
The only balloon-tire wagon here whose maker publishes real numbers: 600 lb load, 200 L, and a tire pressure spec.
| Carry weight | Sekey does not publish an empty weight |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds; no folded dimensions published |
| Size / capacity | 600 lb maximum load, 200 L capacity (Sekey manual) |
| Setup | Unfold; inflate the balloon wheels to spec before first use |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 600 lb load and 220 lb per wheel, published in Sekey's own manual rather than a seller's bullet point
- Sekey publishes the tire pressure — 0.15-0.20 BAR, roughly 2.2-2.9 PSI — which is the number that decides whether balloon tires work at all
- Low-pressure balloon wheels spread load over a wide contact patch, which is the physics of floating instead of plowing
Where it falls short
- No published empty weight, and balloon-tire wagons are the heaviest kind
- Sellers describe the tires as both 9 in diameter and 9 in wide; the manual settles the load figures but not the geometry
- Pneumatic tires need checking and occasionally pumping — a maintenance item a solid wheel does not have

Mac Sports Push & Pull Wagon
300 lb capacity and a handle you can push instead of drag — the difference that matters uphill in sand.
| Carry weight | 27.1 lb (Mac Sports) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 32.3 x 23 x 8.3 in folded (Mac Sports) |
| Size / capacity | 44.9 x 23 x 38.6 in open; 300 lb capacity |
| Setup | Open the frame; the handle converts between push and pull |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 300 lb is double the standard All-Terrain's capacity
- Pushing uses your legs; dragging uses your shoulders. Over soft sand that is the whole game
- Deepest interior here at 31 x 17.8 x 13.5 in
Where it falls short
- 27.1 lb empty — the heaviest wagon in this registry
- 44.9 in long open, which needs a real car boot

Category photo#3 · The default soft-sand wagon
Mac Sports All-Terrain Beach Wagon
Wide-tread rubber wheels, 150 lb capacity and under 22 lb empty — the wagon most beach days actually need.
| Carry weight | Under 22 lb (Mac Sports) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds to under 10 in (Mac Sports) |
| Size / capacity | 37 x 21 x 25 in open; 150 lb capacity |
| Setup | Pull the frame open; no assembly |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | 600D polyester, mildew and UV resistant (Mac Sports) |
What it does well
- Large rubber wheels with wide treads — width is what keeps a wagon on top of dry sand
- Folds under 10 in, so it goes in a car with the cooler, not instead of it
- 150 lb capacity covers a full family load with margin
- Mac Sports publishes open dimensions, folded size, capacity and weight, which most wagon brands do not
Where it falls short
- Under 22 lb is still 22 lb to lift in and out of a car
- Pull handle only — the push-and-pull model is a separate product

Category photo#4 · Chairs, cooler and umbrella in one trip
Rio Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Cart
The upright beach cart rather than a wagon: 10 in rear wheels, straps for chairs and a dedicated umbrella holder.
| Carry weight | Retailers list 19 lb and 22 lb for the Deluxe variants |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; retailers list roughly 41 x 26 x 34 in assembled |
| Size / capacity | 100 lb capacity and 15 cu ft of storage per retailer listings |
| Setup | Unfold, strap chairs to the frame, slot the umbrella |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 10 in rear wheels — the biggest diameter in this registry, and diameter is what rolls over ruts
- Carries chairs and an umbrella on the outside of the frame, so the basket stays free
- Retailers consistently cite a 48 qt cooler plus four chairs
Where it falls short
- Rio Brands' own site was unreachable when we checked, so every figure here is a retailer's and they disagree on weight
- An upright cart tips more easily than a four-wheel wagon on a side slope
- 100 lb capacity is the lowest here apart from the Mac Sports lounger

Category photo#5 · One trip, one item
Mac Sports 2-in-1 Beach Day Lounger and Cargo Cart
A cargo cart that unfolds into a 60 in lounger, so the thing you pushed is also the thing you lie on.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat |
| Size / capacity | 100 lb as a cart, 225 lb as a chair; 3.9 cu ft mesh basket |
| Setup | Unfold the frame, then convert to the lounger |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | 600 denier fabric on a powder-coated aluminum frame |
What it does well
- Removes an entire item from the car: cart and lounger in one
- 3.9 cu ft of mesh basket, and mesh means sand falls out instead of collecting
- 60.5 in long as a lounger — a genuine full-length lie-down
Where it falls short
- Mac Sports publishes no empty weight, which is the figure that decides whether you can load it alone
- 100 lb as a cart is the lowest cargo capacity in the Mac Sports range
