Beach Wagons & Carts

The Best Beach Carts for Soft Sand

A cart trades two wheels for bigger ones and hangs your chairs on the outside. On a narrow path that is the better trade.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

A beach cart is an upright frame on two large wheels that you tilt and pull, with chairs strapped outside and an umbrella in a dedicated holder. It beats a wagon on narrow paths, on steep access and for carrying long items; it loses on side slopes, where two wheels tip and four do not.

Cart geometry, and why it works on a path

Two wheels instead of four means half the contact points, so each one carries more load — which sounds bad until you notice that cart wheels are much larger. Retailer listings put the Rio Wonder Wheeler's rear wheels at 10 inches, the largest diameter anywhere in this registry. Diameter is what climbs out of a rut and over the lip where a boardwalk meets sand.

The other structural advantage is the frame. A cart is tall and narrow, so it fits a path a wagon has to be dragged sideways down, and it carries chairs, towels and an umbrella strapped to the outside rather than filling the load space. In practice that is why a cart with a published 100 lb capacity can swallow a family's kit that will not fit in a 150 lb wagon.

What the Rio figures actually are

Rio Brands' own site was unreachable when we checked, so everything available is from retailers, and they disagree: 19 lb and 22 lb for the Deluxe depending on the listing; 100 lb capacity in most places and 77 lb in an older-style listing; assembled dimensions differing by a couple of inches between Kohl's listings for closely related models.

That is reported rather than resolved. When a manufacturer will not publish a spec sheet, averaging the resellers is not research, it is laundering.

The hybrid option

Mac Sports' 2-in-1 Beach Day Lounger is the interesting middle: a mesh cargo cart that converts into a 60.5 inch lounger, 100 lb as a cart and 225 lb as a chair, with a 3.9 cu ft mesh basket. Mesh matters here — sand falls out instead of collecting, in the same way CGEAR's dual-weave wagon floor works.

It removes an item from the car rather than adding one, which for a couple is a genuinely good trade. It does not replace a wagon for a family of five.

#1 · Chairs, cooler and umbrella in one trip

Rio Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Cart

The upright beach cart rather than a wagon: 10 in rear wheels, straps for chairs and a dedicated umbrella holder.

Carry weightRetailers list 19 lb and 22 lb for the Deluxe variants
Packed sizeFolds flat; retailers list roughly 41 x 26 x 34 in assembled
Size / capacity100 lb capacity and 15 cu ft of storage per retailer listings
SetupUnfold, strap chairs to the frame, slot the umbrella
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materialsNot published

What it does well

  • 10 in rear wheels — the biggest diameter in this registry, and diameter is what rolls over ruts
  • Carries chairs and an umbrella on the outside of the frame, so the basket stays free
  • Retailers consistently cite a 48 qt cooler plus four chairs

Where it falls short

  • Rio Brands' own site was unreachable when we checked, so every figure here is a retailer's and they disagree on weight
  • An upright cart tips more easily than a four-wheel wagon on a side slope
  • 100 lb capacity is the lowest here apart from the Mac Sports lounger

#2 · One trip, one item

Mac Sports 2-in-1 Beach Day Lounger and Cargo Cart

A cargo cart that unfolds into a 60 in lounger, so the thing you pushed is also the thing you lie on.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeFolds flat
Size / capacity100 lb as a cart, 225 lb as a chair; 3.9 cu ft mesh basket
SetupUnfold the frame, then convert to the lounger
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materials600 denier fabric on a powder-coated aluminum frame

What it does well

  • Removes an entire item from the car: cart and lounger in one
  • 3.9 cu ft of mesh basket, and mesh means sand falls out instead of collecting
  • 60.5 in long as a lounger — a genuine full-length lie-down

Where it falls short

  • Mac Sports publishes no empty weight, which is the figure that decides whether you can load it alone
  • 100 lb as a cart is the lowest cargo capacity in the Mac Sports range

#3 · Not bringing the beach home

CGEAR Sand-Free Beach Wagon

A wagon with CGEAR's patented dual-weave floor, so sand falls out through the base instead of riding home in the car.

Carry weightCGEAR's own listing gives both 21 lb and 24.25 lb in the same spec block
Packed sizeFolds to about the size of a folding chair (CGEAR)
Size / capacity35 x 20 x 44 in; supports up to 150 lb
SetupFolds open and shut with a pull tab
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materialsNot published

What it does well

  • The dual-weave floor is the only real answer to sand in the wagon, and CGEAR holds the patent on it
  • Non-absorbent surface, so spills drain rather than pool
  • Adjustable handle that locks out of the way

Where it falls short

  • CGEAR's own spec block contradicts itself on the weight — 21 lb and 24.25 lb, both printed
  • Four grooved wheels, not balloon tires: it handles mixed terrain rather than specializing in deep dry sand

#4 · The default soft-sand wagon

Mac Sports All-Terrain Beach Wagon

Wide-tread rubber wheels, 150 lb capacity and under 22 lb empty — the wagon most beach days actually need.

Carry weightUnder 22 lb (Mac Sports)
Packed sizeFolds to under 10 in (Mac Sports)
Size / capacity37 x 21 x 25 in open; 150 lb capacity
SetupPull the frame open; no assembly
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materials600D polyester, mildew and UV resistant (Mac Sports)

What it does well

  • Large rubber wheels with wide treads — width is what keeps a wagon on top of dry sand
  • Folds under 10 in, so it goes in a car with the cooler, not instead of it
  • 150 lb capacity covers a full family load with margin
  • Mac Sports publishes open dimensions, folded size, capacity and weight, which most wagon brands do not

Where it falls short

  • Under 22 lb is still 22 lb to lift in and out of a car
  • Pull handle only — the push-and-pull model is a separate product

Questions people actually ask

+Is a beach cart better than a beach wagon?
On narrow paths, steep access and for long items, yes. On side slopes and for bulk capacity, no. The full comparison is in beach cart vs beach wagon.
+How much does a Rio Wonder Wheeler hold?
Retailer listings give 100 lb and about 15 cu ft of storage, commonly described as a 48 qt cooler plus four chairs. Rio Brands publishes no spec sheet we could reach, and retailer weights for the cart itself disagree at 19 lb and 22 lb.
+Do beach carts work in deep dry sand?
The ones with large-diameter wheels do reasonably well, because diameter helps a wheel ride over rather than dig in. For the very worst dry sand, wide balloon tires on a wagon are still better.
