Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

Buy a chair with padded backpack straps if you carry more than the chair — which is nearly everyone. The straps cost you two or three pounds against a minimal chair, and they buy you both hands for the cooler, the bag and a child.

Not all straps are backpack straps

Three different things get called a carrying system, and they are not equivalent:

  • A single shoulder strap. Fine for fifty yards. It loads one shoulder and slides off when you lean.
  • Unpadded dual straps. Better balance, and the webbing digs in under a 7 lb chair after a few hundred yards.
  • Padded dual straps. What Sun Ninja, Tommy Bahama and Shibumi fit. This is the one that makes a long carry genuinely comfortable.

Product photos rarely make the difference clear. Look for the word "padded" in the specification, and for the straps being attached at four points rather than two.

The weight you can actually carry on your back

A 7 lb chair on padded straps is easier to carry 400 yards than a 4 lb chair in one hand. That sounds wrong and is not: a hand carry loads one side and fixes your grip, while a back carry puts the mass over your hips and leaves both arms free. It is why the lightest chair on this site — the Helinox at 3 lb 7.5 oz — is not the easiest one to get down a long beach.

Backpack chair plus wagon is the best of both

The honest answer for a family: backpack chairs for the adults, and a wagon for everything else. Two adults wearing chairs can haul a wagon between them and make one trip instead of three. The alternative — chairs in the wagon — works too, and uses most of the wagon's capacity on four chairs.

#1 · Getting back up again

Sun Ninja High Beach Chair

The same chair with a 17 in seat instead of 8.5 in — the single change that matters most to most people.

Carry weight7 lb (Sun Ninja)
Packed sizeFolds flat; padded shoulder straps
Size / capacity17 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja)
SetupUnfold and pick one of five recline positions
How it holds downTaller, so marginally more affected by wind when empty
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • A 17 in seat is roughly dining-chair height: you stand up out of it, not off it
  • No weight penalty at all against the low version — both are 7 lb
  • Same five positions, cup holder, phone holder and insulated pouch

Where it falls short

  • Sits you above the windbreak a low chair gives you
  • A taller center of gravity on soft sand, so it wants a flatter patch

#2 · A low chair with the usual comforts

Sun Ninja Beach Chair

A 7 lb low-slung chair with five recline positions, backpack straps and an insulated back pouch.

Carry weight7 lb (Sun Ninja)
Packed sizeFolds flat; padded shoulder straps for carrying
Size / capacity8.5 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja)
SetupUnfold and pick a recline position
How it holds down7 lb and low to the ground — stable once someone is in it
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Five recline positions, a cup and phone holder and an insulated pouch, at 7 lb
  • 8.5 in seat height is the classic low beach position, close to the sand
  • Padded backpack straps, so your hands stay free for everything else

Where it falls short

  • An 8.5 in seat is a long way down if your knees object
  • Double the weight of a Helinox, for comforts you may not use

#3 · The one everyone already owns

Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair

The default American beach chair: backpack straps, a cold pouch and a cup holder — and published specs that change from seller to seller.

Carry weightSellers list 6 lb, 7 lb, 8 lb and 11.2 lb for chairs under this name
Packed sizeOne Walmart listing gives 4 x 25 x 27.25 in folded
Size / capacity9 in seat height on most listings; capacity listed as 250 lb or 300 lb depending on the seller
SetupUnfold; four or five positions depending on the model
How it holds downLow and wide, so stable in use
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Padded backpack straps, insulated pouch, cup holder and towel bar as standard
  • Sold nearly everywhere, so you can sit in one before you buy
  • Reclines further back than most chairs at this price

Where it falls short

  • There is no single Tommy Bahama backpack chair — several models share the name and sellers publish different weights and capacities for each. Check the model number on the box
  • The heaviest versions are nearly three times a Helinox

#4 · The highest published capacity here

Shibumi Tall Chair

A 17 in-high beach lounger on a marine-grade frame, rated by Shibumi to 400 lb.

Size / capacity17 in seat height, supports up to 400 lb (Shibumi)
SetupUnfold; four recline positions
How it holds downA heavier-built frame than the packable chairs here
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • 400 lb is the highest capacity any maker in this registry publishes
  • Anti-rust marine-grade frame, which is the part that fails first on cheap beach chairs
  • A headrest shaped to keep pressure off the neck, which almost no beach chair bothers with

  • No published weight, on a product you carry on your back

Questions people actually ask

+Are backpack beach chairs comfortable to carry?
With padded dual straps, yes — a 7 lb chair on your back is easier over distance than a 4 lb one in your hand, because the load sits over your hips and both arms stay free.
+What is the lightest backpack beach chair?
Of the chairs here with published weights and padded straps, Sun Ninja's at 7 lb. Shibumi's chairs have padded straps but no published weight.
+Can you carry two beach chairs at once?
One on your back and one in your hand, comfortably. Two on your back is awkward unless the chairs are designed to clip together — some makers sell carry clips for exactly that.
