Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

Cotton or microfiber: pick your trade

Cotton is more absorbent per square inch, feels better and lasts for years. It is also heavy, bulky, and stays wet long enough to be unpleasant in a bag. Microfiber dries in a fraction of the time, packs to a fraction of the volume, and does not feel like a towel.

There is no winner, only a question: are you walking fifty yards from a car, or packing for a flight? The first favors cotton, the second favors microfiber, and most people who travel end up owning one of each. The detail is in microfiber vs Turkish cotton beach towels.

The published figures, which are thin on the ground

Dock & Bay is unusual and worth crediting: it publishes an actual size guide with dimensions and weights, giving 200 x 90 cm (78 x 35 in) and 500 g for its XL. Almost nobody else in this category publishes a weight at all.

Note that even the brand publishing figures has sellers contradicting it: retailer listings for the Dock & Bay XL give 485 g and 508 g against the maker's 500 g, and disagree on whether it dries twice or three times as fast as cotton. That is the general state of the category.

Size: bigger than you think

A standard bath towel is roughly 27 x 52 inches, which is not enough to lie on. A proper beach towel starts around 35 x 70 inches; Dock & Bay's XL at 78 x 35 in covers a sun lounger end to end, which is the practical test.

If more than one person is lying down, you are better off with a blanket and towels only for drying. Two towels side by side slide apart and collect sand in the gap.

Features that genuinely help

  • A pouch. Dock & Bay includes one. A towel with its own bag ends up in the beach bag rather than draped over everything.
  • A zip pocket. Matador puts one in its NanoDry beach towel — keys and a phone stay with the towel rather than in the sand.
  • A hanging loop. Neso fits a woven hanger tag, which is the difference between a towel that dries overnight and one that smells by Wednesday.
  • Grip. Nomadix's towels grip a lounger instead of sliding off it, which sounds minor until you have chased one across a pool deck.

#1 · A full-size towel that packs like a sweater

Dock & Bay Quick Dry Towel, Extra Large

78 x 35 in of towel at 500 g, which is the clearest weight-to-size figure any towel brand here publishes.

Carry weight500 g / 1.1 lb (Dock & Bay size guide)
Packed sizePacks down to roughly the size of a book; pouch around 11 x 6 in per retailer listings
Size / capacity200 x 90 cm / 78 x 35 in
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downLight — weight it down or it will travel
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Dock & Bay publishes an actual size-and-weight guide, which almost no towel brand does
  • 78 x 35 in covers a sun lounger, at 1.1 lb
  • Comes with its own pouch rather than needing a bag

Where it falls short

  • Retailer listings disagree on both the weight (485 g to 508 g) and how fast it dries (twice or three times cotton)
  • Microfiber feels like microfiber: quick-drying, not plush

#2 · One towel for everything

Nomadix Original Towel

A recycled-fiber towel built to be the only one you own — beach, gym, yoga mat and travel.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeRolls small; no published packed size
Size / capacityFull size; Nomadix also sells a 54 x 30 in Ultralight
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downLight
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Made from recycled material, and sold on the honest argument of owning fewer things
  • The Ultralight sibling has a published 54 x 30 in size if you want a figure before you buy
  • Grips a lounger better than a slippery microfiber sheet

Where it falls short

  • No published weight or size for the Original itself
  • Thinner than a cotton beach towel, which is the point and also the complaint

#3 · People who want an actual cotton towel

Neso Beach Towel

An oversized OEKO-TEX certified cotton towel, for everyone unconvinced by microfiber.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeCotton — packs like cotton, which is to say not small
Size / capacityOversized; exact dimensions not published
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downHeavy enough to stay where you put it
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • 100% Pakistani cotton, OEKO-TEX certified — the certification is published, which is unusual
  • Plush and absorbent in a way no quick-dry towel manages
  • A woven hanger tag, so it dries properly instead of staying damp in a bag

Where it falls short

  • Cotton is the wrong answer if packed size is your constraint
  • Stays wet far longer than any microfiber towel here

#4 · Flying with a beach towel

Matador NanoDry Packable Beach Towel

Size / capacityFull-sized beach towel
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downVery light
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • A zip pocket in a beach towel is a genuinely good idea — keys and a phone stay with you
  • Nanofiber packs smaller than microfiber at the same towel area
  • Matador's smaller NanoDry towels absorb twice their weight, per the brand

Where it falls short

  • No published weight or laid-flat size for the beach version
  • Nanofiber is the least towel-like fabric here to the touch

Questions people actually ask

+What size should a beach towel be?
At least 35 x 70 inches to lie on comfortably. Dock & Bay publishes 78 x 35 in for its XL, which covers a full sun lounger.
+Are microfiber beach towels better than cotton?
For packing and drying speed, clearly. For comfort and absorbency per square inch, cotton. See microfiber vs Turkish cotton.
+How heavy is a beach towel?
Dock & Bay publishes 500 g (1.1 lb) for its XL microfiber towel. Most other brands publish no weight at all, and a wet cotton towel weighs several times its dry weight.
