Beach Bags

Bags that survive salt water and shed sand, instead of storing it in the seams.

A beach tote bag packed with a towel

A beach bag has one hard job: survive sand and salt water without storing either. Most fabric totes fail at it, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of quality — an expensive canvas tote fails the same way a cheap one does, just more slowly.

Why woven fabric loses

Woven fabric has seams, and seams are grooves. Sand gets into them and stays, because there is nowhere for it to go and you cannot reach it. Add salt water and the fabric holds damp, which is how a beach bag ends up smelling like a beach bag by August.

The products that actually solve this do so by not being woven fabric. A molded EVA tote has no seams to trap grit, rinses with a hose, and has holes in the base so sand falls out rather than collecting. That is a genuinely different object, which is why the category moved that way.

The three things to check

  1. Does sand have a way out? Base holes or a mesh panel. Without one, sand stays in the bag until you turn it upside down at home.
  2. Does it stand up? A half-empty bag on uneven sand falls over and tips its contents into the sand. Bogg describes its totes as tip-proof; Simple Modern fits a treaded non-slip bottom to the Getaway Bag. Both are real design decisions.
  3. Where does wet swimwear go? Either a separate waterproof pocket or your dry things get wet. Simple Modern's detachable zip pocket and Neso's waterproof inner pocket are the two answers in our registry.

Waterproof means three different things

Read the wording carefully — careful brands say water-resistant where they mean it.

Wipe-clean waterproof shellNever absorbs water; rinses cleanSeal — the top is open

Read the wording carefully — careful brands say water-resistant where they mean it.

No beach tote in our registry is a dry bag. The sensible setup is a water-resistant tote plus a cheap small roll-top dry bag inside it for phone, keys and cash — together they cost less than most bags marketed as waterproof and actually solve the problem. See waterproof beach bags.

The two-bag system

Mesh and canvas are not competitors, they are different tools. Mesh lets sand out and holds nothing dry; canvas and molded totes hold everything, including the sand. Nearly everyone converges on the same arrangement:

  • A main bag — molded or coated — for towels, food, sunscreen and valuables.
  • A mesh bag for everything sandy: buckets, spades, flip-flops, snorkels. It never goes inside the main bag.
  • A small dry pouch inside the main bag for phone, keys and cash.

Three items, each doing one job properly, and the mesh bag costs almost nothing. The reasoning is in mesh vs canvas beach bags.

The specification nobody publishes

Dimensions. Bogg publishes no measurements for any of its sizes, and Simple Modern publishes none for the Getaway Bag — though it publishes full dimensions for the Harper Tote, down to strap and zip lengths, which makes the omission elsewhere more conspicuous. In a category where the main question is "will my stuff fit", that is a strange thing for the industry to leave out.

Tote or backpack?

The decision is distance. Under about a hundred yards a tote wins on capacity and ease of loading. Beyond that, both hands free is worth more than volume, particularly if you are also carrying a chair or a child. Neso's tote straps convert to backpack straps, which is a quietly excellent feature and surprisingly rare — see bag vs backpack.

Making one last

Empty it completely at the end of the day, including the pockets nobody checks. Hose the inside of a molded bag, or turn a fabric bag inside out and brush the seams. Rinse the zips — salt crystallizing in a zip is the commonest way a good bag is retired. Dry it open, not folded, and not in the boot of a car.
