Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.
The short answer
Why built-in canopies disappoint
A canopy hinged to the back of a chair has three structural problems. It is small, because the frame has to fold with the chair. It is fixed in angle relative to the seat, so it stops shading your face as the sun moves. And it adds weight and bulk to the one item you were trying to keep light.
That is why this page recommends the clamp route for most buyers, and why the chairs listed here are good chairs with good shade attached rather than chairs chosen for their built-in hoods.
The clamp-on approach, in numbers
| Product | Weight | Canopy | Rotation | UPF |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMMSUN 47 in clamp umbrella | 2 lb (AMMSUN) | 47 in | 180 degrees on the clamp | Not published for this model |
| Sport-Brella Versa-Brella XL | 2.5 lb per distributor | 44 x 44 in | Four-way swivel | UPF 50+, 99.5% UVA/UVB per listing |
Clamp-on shade options against what their makers publish.
Two pounds is remarkable in this category. For comparison, the lightest freestanding shade in our umbrella roundup is 7.15 lb, and the lightest canopy is 6 lb. If you are shading one or two people, the clamp is the lightest route to shade that exists.
When a built-in canopy is the right answer
- For a child, where a fixed hood over a small seat covers the whole occupant and nothing needs adjusting.
- When you want one object rather than two, and will genuinely not carry a separate umbrella.
- When the chair stays in one place all day and you are happy to reposition the chair rather than the shade.
What to check on the clamp
- Clamp jaw opening. Listings give 1.5 in and 1.75 in for the Versa-Brella depending on the seller — measure your chair's frame tube first.
- Whether it clamps to a round tube or needs a flat edge. Most beach chairs are round tube.
- How far it swivels. 180 degrees is enough to follow the sun through an afternoon; a fixed-angle clamp is not.
- Whether it also fits a stroller, a wagon rail or a table, which is where the second use comes from.
If you want shade for more than one chair, stop here and read beach canopies instead — one canopy over two chairs is lighter and cheaper than two clamp umbrellas.

Category photo#1 · Shade for one, carried in a bag
AMMSUN 47 in Clamp-On Chair Umbrella
A 2 lb umbrella that clamps to a chair and rotates 180 degrees — the lightest shade in the registry.
| Carry weight | 2 lb (AMMSUN) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Supplied with a shoulder-strap carry bag |
| Size / capacity | 47 in canopy |
| Setup | Loosen the clamp, fix to a chair frame, rotate to the sun |
| How it holds down | Clamped to the chair, so the chair and its occupant are the ballast |
| UPF / materials | Not published as a UPF figure for this model |
What it does well
- 2 lb, which no freestanding shade in this registry comes close to
- Rotates 180 degrees on the clamp, so you chase the sun without moving the chair
- Takes up no floor space on a crowded beach
Where it falls short
- Shades one person, and only while they stay in the chair
- AMMSUN publishes no UPF figure for this model, unlike its full-size umbrellas

Category photo#2 · Clamp-on shade with more canopy
Sport-Brella Versa-Brella XL
The larger clamp-on umbrella: 44 x 44 in of canopy at a listed 2.5 lb.
| Carry weight | 2.5 lb per the distributor listing |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds to roughly 40 x 4 in per the distributor listing |
| Size / capacity | 44 x 44 in open |
| Setup | Universal clamp onto a chair, stroller or rail; four-way swivel |
| How it holds down | Clamped, so its stability is whatever it is clamped to |
| UPF / materials | UPF 50+, listed as blocking 99.5% of UVA and UVB |
What it does well
- A good deal more canopy than a standard clamp umbrella for half a pound more
- Clamps to things that are not chairs — strollers, rails, wagon frames
Where it falls short
- We found no manufacturer spec sheet; sellers disagree on the weight and the clamp width
- At 40 in folded it is longer than it sounds in a packed car

Category photo#3 · Getting back up again
Sun Ninja High Beach Chair
The same chair with a 17 in seat instead of 8.5 in — the single change that matters most to most people.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick one of five recline positions |
| How it holds down | Taller, so marginally more affected by wind when empty |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- A 17 in seat is roughly dining-chair height: you stand up out of it, not off it
- No weight penalty at all against the low version — both are 7 lb
- Same five positions, cup holder, phone holder and insulated pouch
Where it falls short
- Sits you above the windbreak a low chair gives you
- A taller center of gravity on soft sand, so it wants a flatter patch

Category photo#4 · A low chair with the usual comforts
Sun Ninja Beach Chair
A 7 lb low-slung chair with five recline positions, backpack straps and an insulated back pouch.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps for carrying |
| Size / capacity | 8.5 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick a recline position |
| How it holds down | 7 lb and low to the ground — stable once someone is in it |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Five recline positions, a cup and phone holder and an insulated pouch, at 7 lb
- 8.5 in seat height is the classic low beach position, close to the sand
- Padded backpack straps, so your hands stay free for everything else
Where it falls short
- An 8.5 in seat is a long way down if your knees object
- Double the weight of a Helinox, for comforts you may not use

Category photo#5 · Carrying the furthest
Helinox Beach Chair
Three and a half pounds of DAC aluminum that packs to the size of a rolled towel and still takes 320 lb.
| Carry weight | 3 lb 7.5 oz assembled; 3 lb 11.5 oz packed (Helinox) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 21 x 6 x 4.5 in in its zip case (Helinox) |
| Size / capacity | 320 lb capacity (Helinox); sits low to the ground |
| Setup | Shock-corded poles snap together, then the seat clips on |
| How it holds down | Light enough to blow away empty — never leave it unweighted |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Nothing else here combines this little weight with a 320 lb rating
- Packs to 21 x 6 x 4.5 in, so it travels inside luggage rather than strapped to it
- DAC TH72M aluminum with resin hubs — the frame material is published, which is rare
Where it falls short
- No armrests, no recline, no cup holder: it is a seat, not a lounger
- Costs several times what a beach-shop backpack chair costs
- Light enough that an empty one will cartwheel down the beach in a gust
