Beach Chairs
The Best Beach Chairs for Seniors
Getting out of the chair is the problem, not getting into it. Seat height and armrests solve it; a lighter chair does not.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.
The short answer
Why 17 inches is the number
Seventeen inches is roughly standard dining-chair height, and it is the height most people can rise from without using momentum. A low beach chair at 8.5 inches asks you to stand from a deep squat, on sand that gives way under your feet, usually with nothing solid to push against. That combination is what makes beach chairs hard for older adults, not the chair being uncomfortable to sit in.
The good news is that the industry now sells both heights of the same chair. Sun Ninja's High Beach Chair is the 17 inch version of its standard chair, at the same published 7 lb and 300 lb capacity. Shibumi's Tall Chair is 17 inches against 12 for its standard model, and the maker makes exactly this point: standing up becomes almost as easy as lying down.
What else to look for
- Armrests that take weight. A fabric sling between two tubes is not an armrest you can push up from. Look for a rigid arm with a frame behind it.
- A published load rating. Shibumi publishes 400 lb for its Tall Chair and Sun Ninja 300 lb for both of its chairs. Neso publishes no capacity at all for either of its chairs, which is a real gap when sturdiness is the point.
- Wide feet. Narrow tube ends sink and tip. Wide feet keep the chair level, which matters far more when you are pushing yourself upright out of it.
- Weight you can actually carry. A 17 inch chair is no heavier than a low one in Sun Ninja's range, so there is no reason to accept a heavy chair for the height.

The honest limit of our advice here
We can tell you what the chairs measure and what their makers certify them to. We are not qualified to advise on mobility, and we are not going to pretend a product recommendation substitutes for that. If getting up unaided is a genuine difficulty, the seat height above is the specification to take to someone who knows the person.

Category photo#1 · Getting back up again
Sun Ninja High Beach Chair
The same chair with a 17 in seat instead of 8.5 in — the single change that matters most to most people.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick one of five recline positions |
| How it holds down | Taller, so marginally more affected by wind when empty |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- A 17 in seat is roughly dining-chair height: you stand up out of it, not off it
- No weight penalty at all against the low version — both are 7 lb
- Same five positions, cup holder, phone holder and insulated pouch
Where it falls short
- Sits you above the windbreak a low chair gives you
- A taller center of gravity on soft sand, so it wants a flatter patch

Category photo#2 · The highest published capacity here
Shibumi Tall Chair
A 17 in-high beach lounger on a marine-grade frame, rated by Shibumi to 400 lb.
| Carry weight | Shibumi does not publish a chair weight |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds for carrying on padded backpack straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, supports up to 400 lb (Shibumi) |
| Setup | Unfold; four recline positions |
| How it holds down | A heavier-built frame than the packable chairs here |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- 400 lb is the highest capacity any maker in this registry publishes
- Anti-rust marine-grade frame, which is the part that fails first on cheap beach chairs
- A headrest shaped to keep pressure off the neck, which almost no beach chair bothers with
Where it falls short
- Sold direct only — no Amazon listing and no commission to us
- No published weight, on a product you carry on your back

Category photo#3 · Roomier seating, still packable
Neso Chair XL (2-pack)
Neso's bigger, higher chair at 7.9 lb each, again sold in pairs.

|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; carry strap and storage pocket |
| Size / capacity | Higher off the ground than the standard Neso Chair |
| Setup | Unfold and sit |
| How it holds down | Heavier and wider than the standard chair |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Roomier and higher than the standard Neso Chair, which suits taller sitters
- Aluminum and steel frame rather than aluminum alone
Where it falls short
- 7.9 lb each is nearly double the standard Neso Chair
- Again, no published weight capacity

Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair
The default American beach chair: backpack straps, a cold pouch and a cup holder — and published specs that change from seller to seller.
| Carry weight | Sellers list 6 lb, 7 lb, 8 lb and 11.2 lb for chairs under this name |
|---|---|
| Packed size | One Walmart listing gives 4 x 25 x 27.25 in folded |
| Size / capacity | 9 in seat height on most listings; capacity listed as 250 lb or 300 lb depending on the seller |
| Setup | Unfold; four or five positions depending on the model |
| How it holds down | Low and wide, so stable in use |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Padded backpack straps, insulated pouch, cup holder and towel bar as standard
- Sold nearly everywhere, so you can sit in one before you buy
- Reclines further back than most chairs at this price
Where it falls short
- There is no single Tommy Bahama backpack chair — several models share the name and sellers publish different weights and capacities for each. Check the model number on the box
- The heaviest versions are nearly three times a Helinox
