The short answer
Ranked by published weight
| Umbrella | Published weight | Canopy | What holds it down |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMMSUN 47 in Clamp-On | 2 lb (AMMSUN) | 47 in | The chair it is clamped to |
| Sport-Brella Versa-Brella XL | 2.5 lb (distributor listing) | 44 x 44 in | Whatever it is clamped to |
| AMMSUN 6.5 ft Fringe | 7.15 lb (AMMSUN) | 6.5 ft | Nothing in the box — buy an anchor |
| beachBUB Outer Banks | 7 lb 4 oz upper frame and canopy (beachBUB) | 7.5 ft | A filled ballast base, carried separately |
Published weights only. Where the figure covers part of a system rather than the whole thing, the row says so.
That beachBUB row is the one to read twice. The 7 lb 4 oz figure is the upper frame and canopy only, and beachBUB puts it at half what its commercial rivals weigh. The base you fill with sand on arrival is the heavy part, and it is also the reason this is the only umbrella in our registry whose maker publishes a wind-tunnel result — 44 mph — and a safety-standard margin against ASTM F3681-24.
The trade nobody puts on the box
Umbrella weight and umbrella stability are the same number viewed from two directions. A beach umbrella is a canopy on a single pole buried in loose sand, and the only things resisting lift are the depth of the pole and the mass holding the base. Take the mass away to save your shoulders and you have taken away the thing that keeps it on the beach.
beachBUB cites CPSC engineers finding that a 7.5 ft umbrella needs 75 lb of resistance at the bottom of the pole. No 7 lb umbrella produces that on its own. The practical conclusion is not "never buy a light umbrella" — it is that a light umbrella is a light umbrella plus an anchor, and you should budget for both. See beach umbrella anchors and how to anchor one properly.
If you are flying with it
Weight is the wrong spec to optimize for air travel; length is. A folded 6.5 ft umbrella is roughly 5 ft long, the Sport-Brella Versa-Brella XL folds to about 40 x 4 in per its distributor listing, and beachBUB's carry bag is 48 in. None of those is a carry-on item. The 2 lb clamp-on ships with a shoulder-strap bag and is the only one here that travels without a plan.
The alternative worth knowing is that a four-pouch canopy beats every umbrella on shade per pound: the Sun Ninja 2-person is 6 lb for a 5 x 5 ft canopy, packing to 15.7 in. If packability is the whole reason you are reading this, read packable beach shade before you buy an umbrella.
What to check before you buy a light umbrella
- Is there an anchor in the box? On the AMMSUN Fringe there is not. Add one to the order.
- Does it tilt? Push-button tilt matters more than buyers expect once the sun moves off vertical.
- Is a UPF figure published? AMMSUN publishes UPF 50+ and over 98% UV block on its full-size umbrellas; it publishes none for the clamp-on.
- How long is it folded? This is the number that decides the car, the cupboard and the plane.
- What is the rib count and material? The AMMSUN Fringe publishes eight reinforced ribs with a lock slider.

Category photo#1 · Shade for one, carried in a bag
AMMSUN 47 in Clamp-On Chair Umbrella
A 2 lb umbrella that clamps to a chair and rotates 180 degrees — the lightest shade in the registry.
| Carry weight | 2 lb (AMMSUN) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Supplied with a shoulder-strap carry bag |
| Size / capacity | 47 in canopy |
| Setup | Loosen the clamp, fix to a chair frame, rotate to the sun |
| How it holds down | Clamped to the chair, so the chair and its occupant are the ballast |
| UPF / materials | Not published as a UPF figure for this model |
What it does well
- 2 lb, which no freestanding shade in this registry comes close to
- Rotates 180 degrees on the clamp, so you chase the sun without moving the chair
- Takes up no floor space on a crowded beach
Where it falls short
- Shades one person, and only while they stay in the chair
- AMMSUN publishes no UPF figure for this model, unlike its full-size umbrellas

Category photo#2 · Clamp-on shade with more canopy
Sport-Brella Versa-Brella XL
The larger clamp-on umbrella: 44 x 44 in of canopy at a listed 2.5 lb.
| Carry weight | 2.5 lb per the distributor listing |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds to roughly 40 x 4 in per the distributor listing |
| Size / capacity | 44 x 44 in open |
| Setup | Universal clamp onto a chair, stroller or rail; four-way swivel |
| How it holds down | Clamped, so its stability is whatever it is clamped to |
| UPF / materials | UPF 50+, listed as blocking 99.5% of UVA and UVB |
What it does well
- A good deal more canopy than a standard clamp umbrella for half a pound more
- Clamps to things that are not chairs — strollers, rails, wagon frames
Where it falls short
- We found no manufacturer spec sheet; sellers disagree on the weight and the clamp width
- At 40 in folded it is longer than it sounds in a packed car

Category photo#3 · The lightest full-size umbrella here
AMMSUN 6.5 ft Fringe Beach Umbrella
A 7.15 lb tilting umbrella with eight ribs — the straightforward option when you are not buying a base.
| Carry weight | 7.15 lb (AMMSUN) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Not published; a folded 6.5 ft umbrella is roughly 5 ft long |
| Size / capacity | 6.5 ft canopy |
| Setup | Push-button tilt; the pole is screwed or augered into sand |
| How it holds down | Eight reinforced ribs and a lock slider; no ballast base is included |
| UPF / materials | UPF 50+, blocks over 98% of UV (AMMSUN) |
What it does well
- 7.15 lb is genuinely light for a 6.5 ft canopy
- Push-button tilt, which matters more than buyers expect as the sun moves
- AMMSUN publishes both the UPF rating and the UV block percentage
Where it falls short
- No anchor or base in the box — budget for one, and read our anchor guide first
- A plain umbrella in wind is the single most common piece of airborne beach gear

Category photo#4 · The strongest published wind case
beachBUB Outer Banks Commercial Resort Model
The rental-fleet version, and the only beach umbrella here whose maker publishes a wind-tunnel figure and a safety-standard margin.
| Carry weight | Upper frame and canopy 7 lb 4 oz (beachBUB) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Oversized carry bag with extra-wide padded strap and molded handle |
| Size / capacity | 7.5 ft canopy |
| Setup | Same dig-and-fill ULTRA base as the standard system |
| How it holds down | beachBUB states it survived a 44 mph wind tunnel test and exceeds ASTM F3681-24 by 160% |
| UPF / materials | UPF 50+ (beachBUB) |
What it does well
- A published wind-tunnel number and a named safety standard — all but unheard of in this category
- Upper frame and canopy at 7 lb 4 oz, which beachBUB puts at half its commercial rivals
- Ten-year frame warranty
Where it falls short
- Built for rental fleets, and priced that way
- Still a 7.5 ft umbrella: heavy, long and awkward to carry any distance
