Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.
The short answer
The three that matter
- Shade sized for the group. Budget about 16 sq ft per person in a chair. For four with chairs that is roughly 64 sq ft — an 8 x 8 ft canopy or a large cabana. See shade for families.
- A wagon. A 150 lb capacity four-wheel wagon carries shade, chairs, cooler, mat and bags in a single trip. Three trips across soft sand is what ruins the first hour.
- A sand-free mat. A defined clean area where sand mostly is not, which matters enormously with small children and food.
By age
Babies and crawlers
- Deep shade, sized up so it still covers them two hours later
- A sand-free mat under the canopy, with a towel on top
- A change of clothes and more nappies than you think
- Somewhere private to change — the one real argument for a tent with sides
- Shade that does not trap heat: airflow matters more than enclosure for an infant
Toddlers
- A wagon they can ride in, only if its maker says it carries children. Mac Sports states that its Lightweight Collapsible wagon is not made to transport children
- Sand toys, in a mesh bag that never comes onto the mat
- A hat that stays on, and the acceptance that it will not
- Snacks that survive sand, which rules out most of them
Older children
- A bag each, which they carry. Four people carrying something beats one carrying everything
- A light chair each they can manage themselves — a 4.3 lb Neso Chair is within reach of most
- Their own towel, labeled, because otherwise it is yours
- Something to do that is not a screen and does not blow away
What carries what
| Carrier | Contents |
|---|---|
| Wagon | Shade, chairs, cooler, mat, toys |
| Main tote | Towels, sunscreen, hats, snacks, spare clothes |
| Mesh bag | Buckets, spades, flip-flops, anything already sandy |
| Dry pouch | Phone, keys, cash |
| Each child | Their own small bag |
A workable allocation for a family of four or five making one trip.
What to leave at home
- More than one inflatable. Bulky, blows away, nobody plays with the second one.
- A cotton towel each. Heavy wet, bulky dry, holds sand. Quick-dry towels at about 1.1 lb each do the job.
- Anything glass. Many beaches ban it outright, for the obvious reason.
- Good sunglasses. They will be stood on.
Before you go
- Check the wind, not just the temperature — it decides which shade to bring.
- Check the tide, so you are not setting up on sand that disappears.
- Check whether tents are allowed where you are going. See beach rules.
- Freeze the water bottles overnight.
- Agree a meeting point with older children before anyone gets out of the car.

Category photo#1 · Big groups
Sun Ninja Beach Tent, 8-Person
The 10 x 10 ft version of the same design: four times the footprint of the 2-person for less than 3 lb more carry weight.
| Carry weight | 8.8 lb in its bag (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 17.7 x 9.5 x 7.5 in carry bag (Sun Ninja) |
| Size / capacity | 10 x 10 ft canopy, four poles |
| Setup | Four buried sand pouches; longer to pitch than the smaller sizes |
| How it holds down | Sand-pouch anchoring; a bigger canopy catches proportionally more wind |
| UPF / materials | UPF 50+ (Sun Ninja) |
What it does well
- Covers eight people for under 9 lb — the best shade-per-pound figure here
- Only 0.9 lb heavier than the 4-person for nearly double the canopy
- Same sand-pouch anchoring as the smaller sizes, scaled up
Where it falls short
- A 10 x 10 ft canopy is a genuine sail; this is the size to skip on a gusty day
- Needs a bigger patch of beach than crowded shorelines always have

Category photo#2 · Heavy loads over soft ground
Mac Sports Push & Pull Wagon
300 lb capacity and a handle you can push instead of drag — the difference that matters uphill in sand.
| Carry weight | 27.1 lb (Mac Sports) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 32.3 x 23 x 8.3 in folded (Mac Sports) |
| Size / capacity | 44.9 x 23 x 38.6 in open; 300 lb capacity |
| Setup | Open the frame; the handle converts between push and pull |
| How it holds down | Not applicable |
| UPF / materials | Not published |
What it does well
- 300 lb is double the standard All-Terrain's capacity
- Pushing uses your legs; dragging uses your shoulders. Over soft sand that is the whole game
- Deepest interior here at 31 x 17.8 x 13.5 in
Where it falls short
- 27.1 lb empty — the heaviest wagon in this registry
- 44.9 in long open, which needs a real car boot

Category photo#3 · The sand problem, solved properly
CGEAR Original Sand-Free Mat
The patented dual-layer weave that lets sand fall through and not back up — the original, and still the one the others copy.
| Carry weight | Not published per size |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds; sold in S, M, L and XL |
| Size / capacity | Four sizes; heavy-duty D-rings at the corners for staking |
| Setup | Unroll and stake at the corners |
| How it holds down | Stakeable at reinforced D-ring corners; the weave does not act as a sail |
| UPF / materials | UV-stabilized polyethylene (CGEAR) |
What it does well
- The two-layer weave is a mechanism, not a marketing claim: sand passes down through it and cannot come back up
- Liquids drain straight through, so a spilled drink is not a wet patch for the rest of the day
- Reinforced D-rings let you stake it, which almost no beach blanket allows
- CGEAR developed the technology for military use, which is where the UV stabilization and seam reinforcement come from
Where it falls short
- No published weight for any size, on a product people carry a long way
- A woven mat is firmer underfoot than a soft blanket — it is a floor, not bedding
- Sizes sell out: CGEAR's own listings carry back-in-stock dates

Category photo#4 · Wet, sandy, heavy loads
Original Bogg Bag
The washable, tip-proof EVA tote that solved beach bags by not being fabric at all.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Rigid — it does not pack down, it stands up |
| Size / capacity | Bogg's largest size; Baby and Bitty sizes also sold |
| Setup | Not applicable |
| How it holds down | Stands upright and does not tip, per Bogg |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Rinses clean with a hose, which no fabric beach bag genuinely does
- Stands up on its own, so it does not spill its contents into the sand
- Sand falls out through the base holes instead of collecting in seams
Where it falls short
- Bogg publishes no weight or dimensions on its product pages
- Rigid, so it will not squash into a suitcase — a car bag, not a flying one
- The open holes mean it is not a dry bag; anything that must stay dry needs its own pouch

Category photo#5 · A full-size towel that packs like a sweater
Dock & Bay Quick Dry Towel, Extra Large
78 x 35 in of towel at 500 g, which is the clearest weight-to-size figure any towel brand here publishes.
| Carry weight | 500 g / 1.1 lb (Dock & Bay size guide) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Packs down to roughly the size of a book; pouch around 11 x 6 in per retailer listings |
| Size / capacity | 200 x 90 cm / 78 x 35 in |
| Setup | Not applicable |
| How it holds down | Light — weight it down or it will travel |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Dock & Bay publishes an actual size-and-weight guide, which almost no towel brand does
- 78 x 35 in covers a sun lounger, at 1.1 lb
- Comes with its own pouch rather than needing a bag
Where it falls short
- Retailer listings disagree on both the weight (485 g to 508 g) and how fast it dries (twice or three times cotton)
- Microfiber feels like microfiber: quick-drying, not plush
