Do I Need a Beach Wagon?

Only if the walk is long, the load is heavy, and the sand is soft. Two of the three usually means a cart, a backpack chair or a second trip instead.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

You need one if all three are true: the walk from the car is more than about 100 yards, you are carrying more than roughly 50 lb of gear, and the sand is dry and soft. If only one or two are true, a beach cart, a backpack chair or simply making two trips is cheaper, lighter and less to store. A wagon is 16 to 27 lb of equipment that exists to carry equipment.

The three-question test

  1. How far is the walk? Under 100 yards and most people would rather carry. Over a few hundred, with children, the wagon starts paying for itself in one trip.
  2. How heavy is the load? Two chairs, a cooler, a shade, towels and bags is where a wagon wins. A towel and a book is not.
  3. How soft is the sand? This is the one people skip, and it decides which wagon rather than whether. Soft dry sand needs wide tread or low-pressure balloon tires; narrow wheels plow.

What a wagon costs you, honestly

  • An empty weight you lift twice per trip. 16 lb on the Mac Sports Lightweight, under 22 lb on the All-Terrain, 27.1 lb on the Push & Pull — all published by Mac Sports.
  • Car space. These fold, but a folded wagon is still 30 to 32 in wide and 8 to 10 in deep.
  • Somewhere to keep it. A wagon lives in a garage for nine months a year.
  • Sand in the fabric. Which is a real nuisance, and the reason CGEAR's sand-free wagon floor exists at all.

What else solves the same problem, and when each is the better answer.

The upright cart deserves more attention than it gets. The Rio Wonder Wheeler Deluxe straps chairs and an umbrella to the outside of the frame so the basket stays free, and its 10 in rear wheels are the largest diameter in our registry. Retailers list it at 19 lb and 22 lb and disagree, which we would rather say than average. The full comparison is cart vs wagon.

If you do buy one, buy on wheels

Pressure is load divided by contact area. Widen the contact patch and the pressure under the wheel drops below what dry sand will support, and the wagon floats instead of digging in. That is the entire physics of a beach wagon, and it is why wheel width and diameter matter more than capacity, frame material or anything else on the listing.

Mac Sports publishes no wheel diameter for any of its wagons, which is the category's most annoying gap. Sekey publishes a 600 lb load, 220 lb per wheel and a tire pressure spec of roughly 2.2 to 2.9 PSI for its balloon-tire wagon — the pressure figure being the one that decides whether balloon tires work at all. More in do balloon wheels work on sand?

Our answer

For a family that goes to a soft-sand beach several times a season with chairs, a cooler and a shade: yes, and the mid-weight wide-tread wagon is the default. For two adults on a short walk: no, and a backpack chair plus a packable shade does the same job for a fraction of the weight. Everyone in between should answer the three questions above honestly rather than buying for the biggest beach day they might have.

The field is in beach wagons, ranked, with wagons for seniors if the lifting is the constraint and wagons for soft sand if the sand is.

#1 · The default soft-sand wagon

Mac Sports All-Terrain Beach Wagon

Wide-tread rubber wheels, 150 lb capacity and under 22 lb empty — the wagon most beach days actually need.

Carry weightUnder 22 lb (Mac Sports)
Packed sizeFolds to under 10 in (Mac Sports)
Size / capacity37 x 21 x 25 in open; 150 lb capacity
SetupPull the frame open; no assembly
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materials600D polyester, mildew and UV resistant (Mac Sports)

What it does well

  • Large wide-tread wheels — tread width is what keeps a wagon on top of dry sand
  • Folds under 10 in, so it goes in a car with the cooler, not instead of it
  • 150 lb capacity covers a full family load with margin
  • Mac Sports publishes open dimensions, folded size, capacity and weight, which most wagon brands do not

Where it falls short

  • Under 22 lb is still 22 lb to lift in and out of a car
  • Pull handle only — the push-and-pull model is a separate product
  • Mac Sports publishes no wheel diameter, and its own page calls the wheels plastic in one place and rubber in another

#2 · Lifting it into the car alone

Mac Sports Lightweight Collapsible All-Terrain Beach Wagon

16 lb empty, which is six pounds less than the All-Terrain and the whole reason to choose it.

Carry weight16 lb (Mac Sports)
Packed size30.1 x 19.7 x 7.9 in folded (Mac Sports)
Size / capacity32.3 x 19.3 x 22 in open; 27.5 x 17 x 10 in interior
SetupOpen and go
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materialsNot published

What it does well

  • 16 lb is the lightest wagon in this registry, and you feel it at the car
  • Folds to 7.9 in deep
  • Mac Sports publishes open, folded AND interior dimensions

Where it falls short

  • Mac Sports states plainly that it is not made to transport children — take that literally
  • Smaller interior than the All-Terrain, and Mac Sports publishes no capacity figure for it

#3 · Chairs, cooler and umbrella in one trip

Rio Wonder Wheeler Deluxe Beach Cart

The upright beach cart rather than a wagon: 10 in rear wheels, straps for chairs and a dedicated umbrella holder.

Carry weightRetailers list 19 lb and 22 lb for the Deluxe variants
Packed sizeFolds flat; retailers list roughly 41 x 26 x 34 in assembled
Size / capacity100 lb capacity and 15 cu ft of storage per retailer listings
SetupUnfold, strap chairs to the frame, slot the umbrella
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materialsNot published

What it does well

  • 10 in rear wheels — the biggest diameter in this registry, and diameter is what rolls over ruts
  • Carries chairs and an umbrella on the outside of the frame, so the basket stays free
  • Retailers consistently cite a 48 qt cooler plus four chairs

Where it falls short

  • Rio Brands' own site was unreachable when we checked, so every figure here is a retailer's and they disagree on weight
  • An upright cart tips more easily than a four-wheel wagon on a side slope
  • 100 lb capacity is the lowest here apart from the Mac Sports lounger

#4 · Not bringing the beach home

CGEAR Sand-Free Beach Wagon

A wagon with CGEAR's patented dual-weave floor, so sand falls out through the base instead of riding home in the car.

Carry weightCGEAR's own listing gives both 21 lb and 24.25 lb in the same spec block
Packed sizeFolds to about the size of a folding chair (CGEAR)
Size / capacity35 x 20 x 44 in; supports up to 150 lb
SetupFolds open and shut with a pull tab
How it holds downNot applicable
UPF / materialsNot published

What it does well

  • The dual-weave floor is the only real answer to sand in the wagon, and CGEAR holds the patent on it
  • Non-absorbent surface, so spills drain rather than pool
  • Adjustable handle that locks out of the way

Where it falls short

  • CGEAR's own spec block contradicts itself on the weight — 21 lb and 24.25 lb, both printed
  • Four grooved wheels, not balloon tires: it handles mixed terrain rather than specializing in deep dry sand

Questions people actually ask

+Is a beach wagon worth it?
If the walk is over about 100 yards, the load is over roughly 50 lb, and the sand is dry and soft, yes. With only one or two of those true, a cart, a backpack chair or two trips is cheaper and lighter.
+Can you use a regular garden wagon on the beach?
On packed sand, yes. In dry soft sand, narrow hard wheels sink and plow because the contact patch is too small for the load. Wheel width and diameter are what separate a beach wagon from a garden one.
+What is the alternative to a beach wagon?
An upright beach cart for chairs and an umbrella, a backpack beach chair if chairs are the bulk of the load, or walking the firm wet sand and making two trips. All three are lighter and cheaper than a wagon.
