How to Keep a Beach Blanket From Blowing Away
A blanket lifts because it is a solid sheet with air moving under it. Let the air through, or load the corners with the beach itself.

The short answer
Why a blanket lifts at all
A beach blanket is a large, light, solid surface lying on an uneven beach. Air moving along the sand finds the gap under its leading edge, pressure builds underneath, and the sheet balloons and then goes. It is the same mechanism as a kite, and it is why a heavier blanket is only a partial fix: you are adding mass to fight a lifting force rather than removing the lifting force.
Two things actually remove it. Burying the upwind edge so there is no gap for air to enter, and using a fabric that air can pass through instead of pushing against.
The five fixes, ranked by how much they do
| Fix | How well it works | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| An open woven mat instead of a sheet | Best — removes the lifting force | A firmer surface; it is a floor, not bedding |
| Burying the upwind edge | Very effective, free | A minute with your hands |
| Staking at reinforced D-rings | Very effective where available | Only some blankets have them |
| Filling all four corner pockets | Good, and designed in | Needs to be redone if the wind swings |
| Putting the cooler on it | Good, and you brought it anyway | The blanket now has a cooler on it |
What each approach does, and what it costs.
Note what is not on that list: stones from the beach on the corners. They work until the fabric shifts and then they are four rocks inside your folded blanket, abrading it on the way home.
What each kind of blanket gives you to work with
- Woven sand-free mats. Air and sand pass through; the CGEAR Original stakes at the corners. The firmest surface here.
- Packable parachute-nylon blankets. The WildHorn Sand Escape has a patented anchoring design specifically built so it will not blow away, and packs to pouch size. Thin by design.
- Pocket blankets. The Matador Pocket Blanket has corner pockets you fill with sand or stones. Very light, so corner weight matters most here.
- Plush padded blankets. The Nomadix Festival Blanket is heavier with a water-resistant base, so it is less inclined to lift and is the one to bring onto damp morning sand.
If the problem is sand rather than wind
These are different problems with different answers, and people often buy for one and complain about the other. Wind is about lift and edges; sand is about whether the fabric gives grains a route out. The mechanisms are compared in sand-free blanket vs sand-free towel, and the practical routine is in keeping sand off your beach blanket.
If wind is a feature of your beach rather than an occasional nuisance, it is worth reading why pegs fail in dry sand too — the same physics decides every hold-down problem on a beach, from a blanket corner to a canopy anchor.

Category photo#1 · The sand problem, solved properly
CGEAR Original Sand-Free Mat
The patented dual-layer weave that lets sand fall through and not back up — the original, and still the one the others copy.
| Carry weight | Not published per size |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds; sold in S, M, L and XL |
| Size / capacity | Four sizes; heavy-duty D-rings at the corners for staking |
| Setup | Unroll and stake at the corners |
| How it holds down | Stakeable at reinforced D-ring corners; the weave does not act as a sail |
| UPF / materials | UV-stabilized polyethylene (CGEAR) |
What it does well
- The two-layer weave is a mechanism, not a marketing claim: sand passes down through it and cannot come back up
- Liquids drain straight through, so a spilled drink is not a wet patch for the rest of the day
- Reinforced D-rings let you stake it, which almost no beach blanket allows
- CGEAR developed the technology for military use, which is where the UV stabilization and seam reinforcement come from
Where it falls short
- No published weight for any size, on a product people carry a long way
- A woven mat is firmer underfoot than a soft blanket — it is a floor, not bedding
- Sizes sell out: CGEAR's own listings carry back-in-stock dates

Category photo#2 · Covering a group, packing to nothing
WildHorn Outfitters Sand Escape Beach Blanket
A large parachute-nylon blanket with a patented anchoring design that compresses into a pouch the size of a water bottle.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Compresses into a small stuff pouch (WildHorn) |
| Size / capacity | Sized by WildHorn to fit a whole group |
| Setup | Shake out and anchor the corners |
| How it holds down | WildHorn's patented design is specifically built so it will not blow away |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Packs smaller than any mat here — this is the one that lives permanently in a beach bag
- The corner anchoring is the patented part, and it is what separates this from a bedsheet
- Large enough for a group, which is where per-person carry weight gets very good
Where it falls short
- Thin parachute nylon: sand sits on top of it rather than falling through, unlike a CGEAR weave
- No published weight or laid-flat dimensions
- Little padding — it keeps you clean, not comfortable

Category photo#3 · The blanket you always have with you
Matador Pocket Blanket
A blanket that folds into a pocket-sized pouch, for when the alternative is sitting on sand.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Packs to pocket size; a Mini size is also sold |
| Size / capacity | Standard size, plus a Mini for 1-2 people |
| Setup | Unfold; corner pockets take sand or stones as weights |
| How it holds down | Corner weight pockets; otherwise very light |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Small enough that you stop deciding whether to bring it
- A Mini version exists for one or two people, which most brands do not bother with
- Genuinely useful away from the beach — parks, airports, festivals
Where it falls short
- Matador publishes no weight or laid-flat dimensions on the product page
- Thin by design: this is a clean dry surface, not a comfortable one

Category photo#4 · Damp sand and comfort
Nomadix Festival Blanket
A plush-top blanket on a water-resistant base — the one to bring when the sand is wet and you want to stay dry.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Not published |
| Size / capacity | Not published as laid-flat dimensions |
| Setup | Unroll, plush side up |
| How it holds down | Heavier than packable blankets, so less inclined to lift |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- A water-resistant base is the difference between dry and damp on morning sand
- A plush top, which packable nylon blankets cannot offer at any price
Where it falls short
- Nomadix publishes no weight or dimensions for it
- Far bulkier than a packable blanket — this one you decide to bring
