Beach Bags
The Best Beach Bags for Sand Toys
Sandy toys need a bag that lets sand out, not one that keeps it in. That is a mesh bag, and almost nothing else.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.
The short answer
Why mesh, specifically
Sand toys are the sandiest objects on the beach by a wide margin: buckets full of it, spades caked in it, molds that hold it in corners. Put them in a solid bag and you have put a few pounds of beach in your car. Put them in mesh and most of it falls out before you reach the path.
It is the same principle as CGEAR's sand-free mats and the mesh basket on the Mac Sports beach lounger cart: give sand somewhere to go and it goes there.
The drain-hole alternative
A Bogg-style molded tote has holes in the base. They are not mesh, but they let a surprising amount of sand out, and unlike mesh the bag also stands up, carries wet things and can be hosed inside and out. For a family already buying one as the main beach bag, the smaller sizes make reasonable toy bags.
The routine that actually keeps sand out of the car
- Collect the toys fifteen minutes before you leave, not at the moment of leaving.
- Tip every bucket and mold upside down and knock them out at the water's edge.
- Dunk the sandy ones in the sea and let them drip. Wet sand rinses; dried-on sand does not.
- Shake the mesh bag hard before it leaves the sand.
- Keep the toy bag out of the main bag. One sandy bag beats five sandy items.
The wider version of this routine is in getting sand out of everything.
Where the toys ride
In the wagon, not the beach bag. Toys are bulky and light, which is the ideal wagon load, and keeping them out of the main tote keeps the towels clean. If your wagon has a mesh basket, you have already solved this.

Original Bogg Bag
The washable, tip-proof EVA tote that solved beach bags by not being fabric at all.
| Carry weight | Not published |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Rigid — it does not pack down, it stands up |
| Size / capacity | Bogg's largest size; Baby and Bitty sizes also sold |
| Setup | Not applicable |
| How it holds down | Stands upright and does not tip, per Bogg |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Rinses clean with a hose, which no fabric beach bag genuinely does
- Stands up on its own, so it does not spill its contents into the sand
- Sand falls out through the base holes instead of collecting in seams
Where it falls short
- Bogg publishes no weight or dimensions on its product pages
- Rigid, so it will not squash into a suitcase — a car bag, not a flying one
- The open holes mean it is not a dry bag; anything that must stay dry needs its own pouch

What it does well

- No published dimensions or weight
- Too small for a family beach day — this is a one or two person bag

What it does well
- Actual published dimensions, down to the strap and zip lengths — nobody else in this category does that
- A crossbody strap as well as tote handles
- Cordura, canvas and vegan leather versions, so it is not obviously a beach bag
Where it falls short
- Wipe-clean only, and Simple Modern says not to machine wash it
- Soft-sided fabric: sand gets into the seams and stays there
