Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

Microfiber if you fly, walk far, or hate a wet towel in a bag: Dock & Bay publishes 500 g for a 78 x 35 in towel that packs to book size. Turkish cotton if you drive to the beach and want something that feels like a towel and lasts for years. Both shed sand far better than terry towelling.

What each fabric actually is

Microfiber is a very fine synthetic — typically polyester and polyamide — woven flat. Fine fibers create enormous surface area for water to spread across, which is why it dries so fast, and the flat weave gives sand nothing to hook into.

Turkish cotton is a long-staple cotton woven flat rather than looped. Long fibers mean a stronger, smoother yarn; the flat weave means less bulk than terry and far fewer loops for sand. It gets softer with washing rather than wearing out, which is the main argument for it.

Neither is terry towelling, which is the looped fabric most bath towels use and the worst possible choice for sand.

Choose microfiber if

  • You fly with your beach kit
  • You walk a long way to the sand
  • You want the towel dry before you repack it
  • You want the smallest, lightest option available

Choose Turkish cotton if

  • You drive and packed size is irrelevant
  • You dislike how microfiber feels — plenty of people do
  • You want a towel that lasts a decade
  • You would rather avoid shedding microplastics in the wash

The microplastics point, stated fairly

Synthetic fabrics shed microfibers in the wash. That is a genuine environmental consideration and a legitimate reason to prefer cotton, and it is not a reason to pretend microfiber does not dry faster. If it matters to you, a flat-woven cotton towel is the compromise: natural fiber, far better sand behavior than terry, and perfectly fine drying.

What the makers publish

Very little, with one exception. Dock & Bay publishes a size guide with dimensions and weights; Neso publishes that its cotton towel is OEKO-TEX certified, which is a real credential, but no dimensions. Nomadix and Matador publish no weights at all. If you want to compare properly before buying, that gap is most of the reason it is hard.

#1 · A full-size towel that packs like a sweater

Dock & Bay Quick Dry Towel, Extra Large

78 x 35 in of towel at 500 g, which is the clearest weight-to-size figure any towel brand here publishes.

Carry weight500 g / 1.1 lb (Dock & Bay size guide)
Packed sizePacks down to roughly the size of a book; pouch around 11 x 6 in per retailer listings
Size / capacity200 x 90 cm / 78 x 35 in
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downLight — weight it down or it will travel
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Dock & Bay publishes an actual size-and-weight guide, which almost no towel brand does
  • 78 x 35 in covers a sun lounger, at 1.1 lb
  • Comes with its own pouch rather than needing a bag

Where it falls short

  • Retailer listings disagree on both the weight (485 g to 508 g) and how fast it dries (twice or three times cotton)
  • Microfiber feels like microfiber: quick-drying, not plush

#2 · People who want an actual cotton towel

Neso Beach Towel

An oversized OEKO-TEX certified cotton towel, for everyone unconvinced by microfiber.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeCotton — packs like cotton, which is to say not small
Size / capacityOversized; exact dimensions not published
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downHeavy enough to stay where you put it
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • 100% Pakistani cotton, OEKO-TEX certified — the certification is published, which is unusual
  • Plush and absorbent in a way no quick-dry towel manages
  • A woven hanger tag, so it dries properly instead of staying damp in a bag

Where it falls short

  • Cotton is the wrong answer if packed size is your constraint
  • Stays wet far longer than any microfiber towel here

#3 · One towel for everything

Nomadix Original Towel

A recycled-fiber towel built to be the only one you own — beach, gym, yoga mat and travel.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeRolls small; no published packed size
Size / capacityFull size; Nomadix also sells a 54 x 30 in Ultralight
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downLight
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Made from recycled material, and sold on the honest argument of owning fewer things
  • The Ultralight sibling has a published 54 x 30 in size if you want a figure before you buy
  • Grips a lounger better than a slippery microfiber sheet

Where it falls short

  • No published weight or size for the Original itself
  • Thinner than a cotton beach towel, which is the point and also the complaint

#4 · Flying with a beach towel

Matador NanoDry Packable Beach Towel

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizePacks small for travel; the smaller NanoDry towels ship in a silicone case
Size / capacityFull-sized beach towel
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downVery light
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • A zip pocket in a beach towel is a genuinely good idea — keys and a phone stay with you
  • Nanofiber packs smaller than microfiber at the same towel area
  • Matador's smaller NanoDry towels absorb twice their weight, per the brand

Where it falls short

  • No published weight or laid-flat size for the beach version
  • Nanofiber is the least towel-like fabric here to the touch

Questions people actually ask

+Which is better, a microfiber or Turkish beach towel?
Microfiber for packing and drying speed; Turkish cotton for feel and longevity. Both shed sand far better than ordinary terry towelling.
+Do Turkish towels dry quickly?
Faster than terry towelling, because they are flat-woven with far less bulk, and slower than microfiber. They are the middle option on every axis.
+Why does my microfiber towel not absorb anymore?
Almost certainly fabric softener, which coats the fibers. Wash it hot without softener and it usually recovers.
