The short answer
Published rating is the only number worth using
Capacity claims are the easiest specification for a seller to inflate and the hardest for a buyer to check, which is why this page uses manufacturer figures exclusively and names the gaps. Two specifics worth knowing:
- A rating is for static, centered load. Dropping into a chair, or sitting on one arm of it, applies far more than your body weight to a single joint.
- A rating assumes the chair is level. On soft sand it rarely is, and an uneven chair loads two legs instead of four.
The practical consequence: treat the published number as a ceiling with meaningful margin needed, not as a target.
Frame material does the work
Helinox rating a 3 lb 7.5 oz chair to 320 lb is a materials story: DAC TH72M aluminum alloy poles with resin hubs, published by name. Shibumi's 400 lb comes from a marine-grade aluminum frame. Neither is a heavy chair, which is the useful insight — capacity comes from alloy and geometry, not from mass.
Where a listing will not name the frame material, assume steel somewhere in the joints. Steel is strong and it rusts, and a rusted joint is where a beach chair fails.
| Chair | Published capacity | Source | Frame |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shibumi Tall Chair | 400 lb | Shibumi | Anti-rust marine-grade |
| Helinox Beach Chair | 320 lb | Helinox | DAC TH72M aluminum alloy |
| Sun Ninja chairs | 300 lb | Sun Ninja | Lightweight aluminum |
| Tommy Bahama backpack chair | 250 or 300 lb | Retailer listings, which disagree | Aluminum per one listing |
| Neso Chairs / Chair XL | Not published | — | Rust-proof aluminum; XL adds steel |
Every published capacity in this registry, with the source named.
Seat width and height, which ratings do not cover
A high rating on a narrow seat is still a narrow seat. Neso describes its Chair XL as roomier and higher than its standard chair, and Shibumi's Tall Chair pairs its 400 lb rating with a 17 inch seat height. For tall sitters specifically, seat height matters as much as width: a 17 inch seat lets long legs sit at a natural angle instead of folding up.
If height rather than capacity is your issue, the same chairs appear on chairs for seniors, for the same reason.
Every pick in full
Category photo#1 · The highest published capacity here
Shibumi Tall Chair
A 17 in-high beach lounger on a marine-grade frame, rated by Shibumi to 400 lb.
| Carry weight | Shibumi does not publish a chair weight |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds for carrying on padded backpack straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, supports up to 400 lb (Shibumi) |
| Setup | Unfold; four recline positions |
| How it holds down | A heavier-built frame than the packable chairs here |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- 400 lb is the highest capacity any maker in this registry publishes
- Anti-rust marine-grade frame, which is the part that fails first on cheap beach chairs
- A headrest shaped to keep pressure off the neck, which almost no beach chair bothers with
Where it falls short
- Sold direct only — no Amazon listing and no commission to us
- No published weight, on a product you carry on your back

Category photo#2 · Carrying the furthest
Helinox Beach Chair
Three and a half pounds of DAC aluminum that packs to the size of a rolled towel and still takes 320 lb.
| Carry weight | 3 lb 7.5 oz assembled; 3 lb 11.5 oz packed (Helinox) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | 21 x 6 x 4.5 in in its zip case (Helinox) |
| Size / capacity | 320 lb capacity (Helinox); sits low to the ground |
| Setup | Shock-corded poles snap together, then the seat clips on |
| How it holds down | Light enough to blow away empty — never leave it unweighted |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Nothing else here combines this little weight with a 320 lb rating
- Packs to 21 x 6 x 4.5 in, so it travels inside luggage rather than strapped to it
- DAC TH72M aluminum with resin hubs — the frame material is published, which is rare
Where it falls short
- No armrests, no recline, no cup holder: it is a seat, not a lounger
- Costs several times what a beach-shop backpack chair costs
- Light enough that an empty one will cartwheel down the beach in a gust

Category photo#3 · Getting back up again
Sun Ninja High Beach Chair
The same chair with a 17 in seat instead of 8.5 in — the single change that matters most to most people.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps |
| Size / capacity | 17 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick one of five recline positions |
| How it holds down | Taller, so marginally more affected by wind when empty |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- A 17 in seat is roughly dining-chair height: you stand up out of it, not off it
- No weight penalty at all against the low version — both are 7 lb
- Same five positions, cup holder, phone holder and insulated pouch
Where it falls short
- Sits you above the windbreak a low chair gives you
- A taller center of gravity on soft sand, so it wants a flatter patch

Category photo#4 · A low chair with the usual comforts
Sun Ninja Beach Chair
A 7 lb low-slung chair with five recline positions, backpack straps and an insulated back pouch.
| Carry weight | 7 lb (Sun Ninja) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Folds flat; padded shoulder straps for carrying |
| Size / capacity | 8.5 in seat height, 300 lb maximum load (Sun Ninja) |
| Setup | Unfold and pick a recline position |
| How it holds down | 7 lb and low to the ground — stable once someone is in it |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Five recline positions, a cup and phone holder and an insulated pouch, at 7 lb
- 8.5 in seat height is the classic low beach position, close to the sand
- Padded backpack straps, so your hands stay free for everything else
Where it falls short
- An 8.5 in seat is a long way down if your knees object
- Double the weight of a Helinox, for comforts you may not use

Category photo#5 · The one everyone already owns
Tommy Bahama Backpack Beach Chair
The default American beach chair: backpack straps, a cold pouch and a cup holder — and published specs that change from seller to seller.
| Carry weight | Sellers list 6 lb, 7 lb, 8 lb and 11.2 lb for chairs under this name |
|---|---|
| Packed size | One Walmart listing gives 4 x 25 x 27.25 in folded |
| Size / capacity | 9 in seat height on most listings; capacity listed as 250 lb or 300 lb depending on the seller |
| Setup | Unfold; four or five positions depending on the model |
| How it holds down | Low and wide, so stable in use |
| UPF / materials | Not applicable |
What it does well
- Padded backpack straps, insulated pouch, cup holder and towel bar as standard
- Sold nearly everywhere, so you can sit in one before you buy
- Reclines further back than most chairs at this price
Where it falls short
- There is no single Tommy Bahama backpack chair — several models share the name and sellers publish different weights and capacities for each. Check the model number on the box
- The heaviest versions are nearly three times a Helinox
