Bogg Bag vs Simple Modern Getaway Bag

The Bogg solves sand by letting it fall out of the bottom. The Getaway solves water by keeping it in its own pocket. Pick the problem you actually have.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

Buy the Bogg if your complaint is sand and a bag that tips over — it is rigid EVA, stands up on its own, rinses clean with a hose, and sand falls out through the base holes. Buy the Simple Modern Getaway if your complaint is wet swimwear soaking everything else, because it is waterproof and has a detachable water-resistant zip pocket. The Bogg is a car bag; the Getaway travels better.

What each maker publishes, and what each design does by construction.

Note the last two rows. Neither maker publishes a weight or a set of dimensions for these bags, which on a product category sold on capacity is a genuine omission. If published numbers matter to you, the Simple Modern Harper Tote is the only bag in our registry with full dimensions — down to strap and zip lengths.

What the holes in a Bogg actually do

The perforated base is the entire mechanism. Sand that comes into the bag on wet feet and towels works down to the bottom, and then leaves through the holes instead of collecting in fabric seams where it stays all season. It is the same logic as a sand-free mat: give the sand somewhere to go that is not your bag.

The cost is that the bag is not waterproof in either direction. Anything that must stay dry needs its own pouch, and anything wet will drip. That is not a defect; it is the trade the design makes.

Choose the Bogg if

  • Sand in the seams is the thing that has ruined previous beach bags
  • You want to hose the whole bag out in the driveway
  • You drive to the beach and car space is not tight
  • You carry heavy, awkward, wet things and want the bag to stay upright

Choose the Getaway if

  • Wet swimwear soaking dry clothes is your actual complaint
  • You want one bag that works at a pool, on a boat and at the beach
  • You need it to squash into a car or a case
  • You would rather wipe a bag clean than hose it

Size, and the versions that matter

Bogg sells the Original plus Baby and Bitty sizes. The Baby Bogg is the one most people should look at first: the same washable, tip-proof shell at a footprint you can carry one-handed and park in a car without planning around it. The Original is a family-beach-day bag, and too much bag for two people.

On the Simple Modern side, the Getaway is the wet-and-dry specialist and the Harper Tote is the everyday-crossover option in Cordura, canvas or vegan leather. Simple Modern says the Harper is wipe-clean only and should not be machine washed, which is worth knowing before a sandy summer.

If you are flying

The Bogg is the wrong bag. It is rigid, so it does not compress into a case, and it takes its full volume whether it is full or empty. A soft-sided tote wins every time in luggage. See beach bags for travel, and bag versus backpack if you are walking any distance with it.

#1 · Wet, sandy, heavy loads

Original Bogg Bag

The washable, tip-proof EVA tote that solved beach bags by not being fabric at all.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeRigid — it does not pack down, it stands up
Size / capacityBogg's largest size; Baby and Bitty sizes also sold
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downStands upright and does not tip, per Bogg
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Rinses clean with a hose, which no fabric beach bag genuinely does
  • Stands up on its own, so it does not spill its contents into the sand
  • Sand falls out through the base holes instead of collecting in seams

Where it falls short

  • Bogg publishes no weight or dimensions on its product pages
  • Rigid, so it will not squash into a suitcase — a car bag, not a flying one
  • The open holes mean it is not a dry bag; anything that must stay dry needs its own pouch

What it does well

  • A detachable water-resistant zip pocket, so wet swimwear travels separately
  • Treaded non-slip bottom, which matters on a wet boat deck or pool edge
  • Wipes clean rather than needing a wash

Where it falls short

  • Simple Modern publishes no dimensions or weight for it
  • A waterproof outer means a hot bag in direct sun — it does not breathe

What it does well

  • Actual published dimensions, down to the strap and zip lengths — nobody else in this category does that
  • A crossbody strap as well as tote handles
  • Cordura, canvas and vegan leather versions, so it is not obviously a beach bag

Where it falls short

  • Wipe-clean only, and Simple Modern says not to machine wash it
  • Soft-sided fabric: sand gets into the seams and stays there

Questions people actually ask

+Is a Bogg Bag better than a Simple Modern Getaway?
Neither is better; they solve different problems. The Bogg lets sand fall out through its perforated base and rinses clean with a hose. The Getaway is waterproof with a detachable wet pocket, so wet swimwear stays away from everything else.
+Can you put wet things in a Bogg Bag?
You can, but the base holes mean it is not a dry bag in either direction — it will drip, and nothing inside is protected from the water. Pack anything that must stay dry in its own pouch.
+Which one is better for flying?
The Simple Modern. The Bogg is rigid EVA and takes up its full volume in a case whether it is loaded or empty, where a soft-sided tote compresses.
