Are Bogg Bags Worth It?

Worth it if sand in the seams and a bag that tips over are your complaints. Not if you fly with it, or if you need published dimensions before you buy.

Scroll the table sideways on a narrow screen. Every weight above is the figure its manufacturer publishes; where a manufacturer publishes none, the table says so rather than borrowing a retailer's number.

The short answer

Worth it if your previous beach bags died of sand and salt water. A Bogg is rigid EVA rather than fabric: you hose it out, it stands up loaded instead of tipping, and sand works down and out through the holes in the base rather than living in the seams. Not worth it if you fly with your beach bag, need it to pack flat, or want a published weight and set of dimensions, because Bogg publishes neither.

The two problems it genuinely solves

Sand in the seams. Every fabric beach bag collects sand in its stitching and keeps it for the season. A perforated base gives the sand a route out, which is the same logic as a woven sand-free mat: do not try to stop the sand, give it somewhere to go.

A bag that tips over. A soft tote loaded with wet towels falls sideways and empties itself onto the beach. Bogg states the bag is tip-proof and stands upright, and a rigid shell is how you get there. On a boat deck or a pool edge that is worth as much as it is on sand.

The problem it creates

It is not a dry bag in either direction. Those same holes mean water goes out and sand comes in, so nothing inside is protected. Anything that must stay dry — phone, keys, a book — needs its own pouch. If keeping wet away from dry is the thing you actually want, the Simple Modern Getaway is built for exactly that, with a detachable water-resistant zip pocket. The full head-to-head is Bogg vs Simple Modern Getaway.

Which size, if you buy one

Bogg sells the Original plus Baby and Bitty sizes. Neither weight nor dimensions are published for any of them.
SizeWho it suitsWatch out for
OriginalA family beach day with towels, food and gearToo much bag for two people, and it takes its full volume in a car empty
BabyOne or two people, carried one-handedToo small for a family load
BittyA pool bag or a tote within a toteNot a beach day bag on its own

Bogg sells the Original plus Baby and Bitty sizes. Neither weight nor dimensions are published for any of them.

Most people who are unsure should look at the Baby first. It is the same washable, tip-proof shell at a footprint you can carry in one hand and park in a car without planning around it.

Who should not buy one

  • Anyone flying. Rigid EVA does not compress, so it occupies its full volume in a case whether loaded or empty. A soft tote wins every time — see beach bags for travel.
  • Anyone walking far. A tote carried in the hand or over one shoulder is the wrong tool for distance. Bag vs backpack covers it.
  • Anyone who needs it waterproof. The holes rule that out by design.
  • Anyone who buys on published specs. There are none here.

Our verdict

The design is sound and the two things it fixes are the two things that actually ruin beach bags. The hype around the brand is not evidence of anything, and neither is the absence of published figures evidence against it — it just means you are buying a mechanism you can see rather than a number you can check. If you drive to the beach, load heavy and wet, and want to hose the bag out in the driveway afterwards, it is a sensible buy. If you fly, it is the wrong bag.

The whole field, including mesh and canvas alternatives, is in beach bags, ranked.

#1 · Wet, sandy, heavy loads

Original Bogg Bag

The washable, tip-proof EVA tote that solved beach bags by not being fabric at all.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeRigid — it does not pack down, it stands up
Size / capacityBogg's largest size; Baby and Bitty sizes also sold
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downStands upright and does not tip, per Bogg
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Rinses clean with a hose, which no fabric beach bag genuinely does
  • Stands up on its own, so it does not spill its contents into the sand
  • Sand falls out through the base holes instead of collecting in seams

Where it falls short

  • Bogg publishes no weight or dimensions on its product pages
  • Rigid, so it will not squash into a suitcase — a car bag, not a flying one
  • The open holes mean it is not a dry bag; anything that must stay dry needs its own pouch

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeNot published
Size / capacityNot published as dimensions
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downTip-proof with a treaded non-slip bottom (Simple Modern)
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • A detachable water-resistant zip pocket, so wet swimwear travels separately
  • Treaded non-slip bottom, which matters on a wet boat deck or pool edge
  • Wipes clean rather than needing a wash

Where it falls short

  • Simple Modern publishes no dimensions or weight for it
  • A waterproof outer means a hot bag in direct sun — it does not breathe

#4 · A beach bag you would also use in town

Simple Modern Harper Tote

The one bag here with full published dimensions, in two sizes and three fabrics.

Carry weightNot published
Packed sizeSoft-sided; folds flat
Size / capacitySmall 15 x 6 x 14 in; medium 19 in top width, 13 in base, 6 in deep, 14 in high (Simple Modern)
SetupNot applicable
How it holds downSoft-sided; no tip-proof base
UPF / materialsNot applicable

What it does well

  • Actual published dimensions, down to the strap and zip lengths — nobody else in this category does that
  • A crossbody strap as well as tote handles
  • Cordura, canvas and vegan leather versions, so it is not obviously a beach bag

Where it falls short

  • Wipe-clean only, and Simple Modern says not to machine wash it
  • Soft-sided fabric: sand gets into the seams and stays there

Questions people actually ask

+What makes a Bogg Bag different from a normal beach bag?
It is rigid EVA rather than fabric. That means you can rinse it out with a hose, it stands upright loaded rather than tipping, and sand falls out through holes in the base instead of collecting in seams.
+Can you take a Bogg Bag on a plane?
You can carry one, but it is a poor travel bag: rigid EVA does not compress, so it takes its full volume in a case whether it is full or empty. A soft-sided tote is the better choice for flying.
+What size Bogg Bag should I get?
The Baby Bogg for one or two people, the Original for a family beach day. Bogg publishes no dimensions or weights for any size, so there is no figure to compare — only the use case.
