CGEAR Original Sand-Free Mat
The patented dual-layer weave that lets sand fall through and not back up — the original, and still the one the others copy.

The short answer
What this review is, and what it is not
We have not used this mat. What follows is a specifications-and-fit review: everything CGEAR publishes about the product, read from its own listing on 22 October 2026, plus what the design implies about how it behaves on sand and which buyer it suits. Our reasoning for working this way is on the methodology page.
One update worth flagging, because it changes the page. When we built this site in October 2026, CGEAR published no per-size weight at all, and our product entry said so in plain words. Its listing now publishes a weight and a laid-flat size for all four sizes. We have corrected the entry and the gap we reported is closed.
How the weave works
Two offset woven layers. Sand that lands on top works down through the gaps in the upper layer and ends up on the ground beneath, and the offset means it has no straight path back up. That is the whole patent, and it is why a sand-free mat behaves differently from a sand-free towel: a towel is a surface sand will not cling to once it is dry, and a mat is a structure sand falls through whether it is wet or not.
The same geometry explains three other things about the product. Liquids drain through rather than pooling, so a spilled drink is not a wet patch for the rest of the day. Air passes through, so the mat does not balloon and lift the way a solid sheet does. And it is firm underfoot, because a woven structure is not padding.
The published sizes
| Size | Laid flat | Weight | CGEAR's stated capacity | Carry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 6 x 6 ft / 183 x 183 cm | 2.9 lb / 1.3 kg | About 3 people | Drawstring pouch |
| Medium | 8 x 8 ft / 244 x 244 cm | 5.0 lb / 2.3 kg | About 6 people | Drawstring pouch |
| Large | 10 x 10 ft / 305 x 305 cm | 7.8 lb / 3.5 kg | About 10 people | Drawstring pouch |
| X-Large | 12 x 12 ft / 366 x 366 cm | 10.9 lb / 5.0 kg | About 14 people | Carry tote bag |
CGEAR's own published figures for the Original Sand-Free Mat, read from its listing on 22 October 2026.
Read those weights next to the shade you are already carrying. A 6 x 6 ft mat at 2.9 lb is less than half a Sun Ninja 2-person tent; a 12 x 12 ft mat at 10.9 lb is more than any shade in our registry. The large sizes are a car-and-wagon product, not something you walk a mile with, and CGEAR acknowledging that by putting the X-Large in a tote rather than a drawstring pouch is a sensible bit of honesty.
What CGEAR publishes about the materials
- Ultra-tough polyethylene with UV stabilization — the part that matters on a product that lives in direct sun, and the reason it does not go chalky in a season.
- Reinforced seams and double-reinforced corners carrying heavy-duty D rings, so the mat can be staked down. Almost no beach blanket offers that.
- Resistance to sun, water and mold, which follows from a non-absorbent woven polyethylene rather than being a separate treatment.
- Military origin. CGEAR describes the mat as built to military-grade standards and developed for military use, which is where the UV stabilization and seam reinforcement come from.
What it is not
It is not comfortable in the way a blanket is. A woven mat is a clean, dry, firm floor. Most people who own one put a towel on top of it, which is exactly the right way to use it and is worth knowing before you expect bedding.
It is not a towel. It does not dry you, and it is not meant to. The two products do different jobs and the honest answer for most households is both — the mat is the floor, the towel dries you. We lay that out in sand-free blanket vs sand-free towel, and the towel half of it is our Dock & Bay towel review.
It is not padding. On shingle or hard-packed sand you will feel the ground. On soft sand that does not matter at all.
Which size to buy
CGEAR's person counts are generous in the usual way — "about 3 people" on a 6 x 6 ft mat means three people sitting, not three people with chairs, a cooler and a bag. Our rule of thumb, using CGEAR's own dimensions:
- Two adults, carried any distance: the 6 x 6 ft at 2.9 lb. This is the one that travels.
- A family of four with gear: the 8 x 8 ft at 5.0 lb, which is the size most people should buy.
- A group, or a base camp with chairs on it: the 10 x 10 ft at 7.8 lb, assuming a wagon.
- An awning, an RV pitch or a large party: the 12 x 12 ft at 10.9 lb, which is a vehicle product.
If you are carrying it a long way across soft sand, read carrying gear across sand first — the route matters more than the weight.
The alternatives worth knowing
CGEAR Sandlite. The lighter mat using the same weave, aimed at yoga and stretching as much as the beach. CGEAR publishes no weight or dimensions per size for it, so the Original is now the better-documented of the two — an unusual position for a brand's premium line to be in.
WildHorn Sand Escape. Parachute nylon with a patented corner anchoring design, packing to roughly the size of a water bottle. Sand sits on top of it rather than falling through, so it is a different claim entirely: it keeps you clean, it does not move the sand.
Matador Pocket Blanket. The one you always have with you, with corner pockets you fill with sand. Thin by design, and the right answer when the alternative is sitting on the ground.
Where it sits in our rankings
The Original is our top pick in the best beach mats, sand-free beach blankets and beach blankets overall, and it is the one product on this site we recommend on a patent rather than on a feature list. On price it sits at the top of the ground-cover category, which is the honest trade for the only mechanism in it that works wet. The buy button above shows whatever Amazon is charging today rather than a number we typed in last month.

CGEAR Original Sand-Free Mat
The patented dual-layer weave that lets sand fall through and not back up — the original, and still the one the others copy.
| Carry weight | 2.9 lb (S), 5.0 lb (M), 7.8 lb (L), 10.9 lb (XL) (CGEAR) |
|---|---|
| Packed size | Drawstring pouch on S, M and L; carry tote on the XL (CGEAR) |
| Size / capacity | 6 x 6, 8 x 8, 10 x 10 and 12 x 12 ft; heavy-duty D-rings at the corners for staking |
| Setup | Unroll and stake at the corners |
| How it holds down | Stakeable at reinforced D-ring corners; the weave does not act as a sail |
| UPF / materials | UV-stabilized polyethylene (CGEAR) |
What it does well
- The two-layer weave is a mechanism, not a marketing claim: sand passes down through it and cannot come back up
- Liquids drain straight through, so a spilled drink is not a wet patch for the rest of the day
- Reinforced D-rings let you stake it, which almost no beach blanket allows
- CGEAR developed the technology for military use, which is where the UV stabilization and seam reinforcement come from
Where it falls short
- At 10.9 lb the 12 x 12 ft size is heavier than any shade in this registry — a car-and-wagon product, not a carry
- A woven mat is firmer underfoot than a soft blanket — it is a floor, not bedding
- Sizes sell out: CGEAR's own listings carry back-in-stock dates
